Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (Nov. 19 - Nov. 23)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly
– Practice sight words, sound teams and read good fit books/Raz-Kids.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:
her, after, over, mother, father (add father to the list you have at home.)(Please highlight these on your high frequency word list).
·        Please have your child practice reading the words of the week each night. If he/she reads them with ease, try spelling them. You can also have him/her write a sentence using one of the words of the week. Check that he/she is using uppercase letters only when necessary (first word in sentence/someone’s name/word I), leaving finger spaces between words, and using end punctuation.
·        You can create a tic-tac-toe board on a sheet of paper (with one of the words of the week printed in each square and/or any other words your child may have struggled with in past weeks). In order to put an “x” or “o” in a square, he/she must read the word correctly first!

Sound Teams:  “er ,ir, ur”
These teams all make the same sound.
(please highlight these on your sound team sheet)
·       Have your child practice reading words such as the following: bird, hurt, turn, river, supper, dirt, burst

Reading strategies
: Expand Vocabulary
·        This week we will be tuning in to interesting words in the books that we read.  How many interesting words can your child find while reading at home?

Word Family: -in How many words can you find that end with in?

Writing:
·        We are continuing to work on writing about a small moment and ending our stories with a feeling. For example, “I was happy my friend came over”, “I was exhausted after that busy day!”, “I was sad my cousin had to leave”, etc.
·        We are also working on editing/fixing-up our own writing. Students are asked to look at their writing and fix mistakes involving punctuation, spelling, etc.
·        We have been learning more about what a complete sentence is, how to know when one sentence ends and another begins, and where we need to include a period/end punctuation. Please have your child practice writing two sentences that go together. Make sure he/she listens for where one sentence ends and another begins, and that he/she includes a period at the end of each sentence. You can have your child use the words of the week in his/her sentences.
Example: I saw my mother in the kitchen. She was washing her hands.

Math (Numbers to 20):

·        We will soon be starting formal addition and subtraction. Students need to be confident with counting-on and backwards from different starting points. Please keep practicing!
·        If your child is still struggling with 1 more/less and/or 2 more/less, please keep drilling. This will also be an important skill when we officially begin addition and subtraction.
·        We have been learning about equal and unequal groups. Try posing problems such as: “There are 7 players on the blue team and 4 on the red team. How can I make the two teams equal?” Students should now realize you can add to the group with fewer or take from the group which has more, to make the groups equal. Ask your child, “How many do I need to add to this group of 4 so I will have a group of 7?”, “How many do I need to take from this group with 7 so I will have a group of 4?” etc. We have been using counters, fingers, and are now moving on to counting in our head!
