Grade 1 Mrs. Waugh
Week at a Glance (Dec. 3-7)

Wednesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Thursday.

Nightly
– Practice sight words, sound teams and read good fit books/Raz-Kids.

Literacy:

Words of the Week:
Please review the sight words we have introduced up to this point.
·       Practice reading the words
·       If your child read them with ease, practice spelling the words and/or writing a sentence using one of the words of the week.

Reading:   Work on retelling a story they have just read.
Ask them the question “what was the story about?” They should not simply say that it was about a boy with a dog. They should be able to retell the story with important details and include a beginning, middle and ending.

Sound Team: Review all of the sound teams by asking:
What does ay say? What doe ee say?
How do I spell the sound /ow/ like in the word bow?
What are the 3 ways to spell the sound /a/ like in day? (ai,ay,a-e)
Have them read and write the following words:

stay,meat,stir,float,feet,make,pie,hurt,tie,hope,wing,foot,hoop,window

Remember, if they write hirt, for hurt, this is a great guess as ir and ur both say the correct sound.

Word Family: - review reading and writing the word families introduced up to this point.  Remind students that if they can read ball, they can read tall, call mall etc.

Reading strategies: Monitor and Fix-up
This week we will be practicing monitoring and fixing-up. Students often don’t realize when they make an error when reading, so we will be learning how to “cross check” (asking yourself - Does that look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?). Students must pay attention to what they are reading and be able to stop and self-correct if an error is made.

Writing: Transition Words (sentence starters)
This week students will be learning how to begin sentences in different ways, in order to properly sequence events in our stories and to make our writing more fluent. Students will learn different transition words/sentence starters to begin their sentences with – First, Then, Next, After, Finally, etc.

Math (Numbers to 20):    Please take this week to work on any of the following math concepts listed in last week’s homework, your child may be struggling with:

·        We are continuing to focus on teen numbers:

·        How many is ten and 9? Ten and 6?

·        Which is more 18 or 14?     Which is less? 19 or12?      How do you know?

·        Put these in order from greatest to least.      13, 19, 11, 14, 10 etc.   Try least to greatest.

·        There are 18 dogs. How many might be playing and how many might be sleeping? Can you think of another combination?

·        There are 14 jelly beans. 8 are red so how many are green?
