Memo for Garden Creek Parents and Guardians
Good
afternoon, Creeker Families:
We
hope your families had a wonderful break as did our staff. I have just checked
the calendar and we have 6 weeks of hard work, learning and growing until
Easter. This is a great period of time for students to work on their learning
goals.
Creeker
Interns
– I would
like to welcome Mlle McLean, M. Macoomb and Mlle MacKenzie to Garden
Creek. They will be interning in French Immersion for the next few weeks. Mr.
Kornas is also returning to continue his internship in Mr. Burnett’s
class. Thank you to Mme. Arntsen, Mme. Cairns, Mme. Doyle and Mr. Burnett
for sharing their practice.
Momo
Challenge Note-
The following is an important note in conjunction with the
District in regard to Momo:
As
you know, the Internet provides many learning opportunities for students, but
unsupervised online access also comes with risks. Parents need to be informed
of what their children see and hear on the Internet, who they meet and what
information they may share with others. We are reaching out to you to discuss
an important online safety matter currently trending on social media called the
Momo Challenge. This is a disturbing online pop-up figure that may appear
during snapchats, video clips or online games, urging children to take part in
self-harm. Threatening statements can be made if directions from Momo are not
followed by the user. Our school has encountered students talking about Momo
and expressing worries about the challenge and what it may mean. In response,
teachers have been discussing the topic with their students from an Internet
safety point of view. We encourage you to educate yourself about the Momo
challenge, talk with your children, and be on the lookout when your children
are online.
By
working together, we can continue to ensure the safety and security of our
students. For further reassurance, the RCMP maintains an online portal of
resources around child internet safety which can be found at the link: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cycp-cpcj/is-si/isres-ressi-eng.htm
