Giant food drive at Leo Hayes High School a huge success

Students at Leo Hayes High School stuffed a bus full of 3,420 pounds (1,551.2 kilograms) of groceries on Oct. 26 in support of the school's Feeds the Lions campaign and student hunger program.

This year's food drive was led by student leader Abby Carter who rallied a team effort between We Leo Hayes (Free the Children) and Feed the Lions in cooperation with local businesses Giant Tiger and Right Choice Realty.

"Yahoo, what an amazing success!" said Principal Brad Sturgeon when he saw the amount of food collected.

In the days leading up to the drive, approximately 30-40 student volunteers handed out flyers in their neighbourhoods and then returned later to pick up donations.

Their school bus for 'Stuff the Bus' was also parked at Giant Tiger on a Saturday where even more donations were gathered. Giant Tiger also sold hundreds of paper bags filled with groceries at the store to place onboard the bus.

"We are so proud of the students involved and we're appreciative of the community's efforts," said teacher Tanya McBride.
