April 13 -18 Edition
Each week’s lesson will be divided into 3 parts. – Learning topic – Learning Topic
Game – Sumdog skills.
It is designed to be spending a minimum of 30 minutes per day on math practice.
I recommend that you spend your first 30 minutes of the week on the learning topic
with your child and introducing the game. The remainder of your child’s time can be
spent practicing the new topic and continuing to practice their mental math.
1. Learning Topic: Division as grouping or sharing. (Big Idea 8)
This topic is very closely related to multiplication, which was our last topic covered in
class.
The following is a YouTube clip that provides a visual demonstration that will help to
introduce the concept to your child. https://youtu.be/bdglIPNNhuI
It would be a great idea to have your child follow the example with their own
counters, which could be anything from buttons to crackers.
Following the video. Try sharing and grouping (dividing) other numbers.
8 ÷ 3 Sharing 12 items with 3 people and grouping 12 items into 3 groups.
8 ÷ 4 Sharing 8 items with 4 people and grouping 8 items into 4 groups.
Solve the following problems.
Have your child show their thinking in pictures, numbers or words.
a) Each table seats 4 children.
There are 20 children who need a seat.
How many tables are needed?
b) The teacher bought juice for the class party.
Each jug holds 10 glasses.
If each student gets 2 glasses, how many students will one
jug serve?
Have your child act out a skit/puppet show modeling a division situation where people or
things are put in equal groups.
2. Learning Topic Game: Pick and Divide
• Materials: Paper/Pencil, dice.

• Put numbers from 1-25 in a hat or bucket. Take turns picking a number and
rolling a die. Each player scores a point if they can divide the number in the
hat into the number of groups indicated on the die. Use counters to help.
3. Continue to practice skills on Sumdog. Division questions will be added to their
skills next week.
