Week of Oct. 15 - 19, 2018

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! Get outside and enjoy this fall (sweater) weather!

In literacy, we learned (and learned more) about the letters Kk and Ee. We talked about the sounds they make (the short vowel sound of e) and some workds that start with these sounds. Kindergarten students learned the words IT and AT. I'll be introducing the words I and SEE this week. Working at home on the sounds we have covered as well as the words will help your child gain this knowledge quicker.

In grade 1 I will introduce 5 new sight words my, out, in, one, not. We also review the letters and the sounds along with the Kindergarten students. This helps to build their vocabulary.

In math, we worked on, and continue to work on, counting forwards and backwards and on subitizing (recognizing arrangements of items quickly). Some websites we used this week are

We talked about fire safety and had a visit from the Fire Chief who told us lots of things about how to keep us safe in our homes. Next week is Safe Schools week and we will be talking about and practicing safety drills including fire drills, lockdown, bus evacuation, and a site evacuation We evacuate to the church that is next door to the school and we walk as a school. We try to reassure the children that we are practicing fo something that may never happen. Please take some time to speak with your child to let them know that this is practice. Some childre worry about these safety drills even with all of our reassurances.

Take a look at the pictures from our apple picking trip. The children had a wonderful time and I think you can see it in their faces.

Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Penney
