Week At A Glance September 11-15, 2017 Grade ¾ Classroom J
Dear Parent/Guardian, September 11-15, 2017
The first week of the schoolyear has been a
success! Students are completing daily routines with ease and are settling in
to their new grade. I’ve loved catching up with the grade 4s and getting to
know all of my grade 3 students!
Please check your child’s
Homework/Communication Bag each day for important notices and homework
materials. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca, or call 453-5422 to schedule
a meeting.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Coes

Areas of
Focus for September 11-15, 2017
Writing- Students will learn about The Daily 5 program
and what it will look like in our classroom when we are Working on Writing and completing
Word Work activities, as well as how to use our writing center. We continue our
focus on the 6 +1 Traits of Writing with lots of chances for students to show
what the already know about editing.
Reading-This week, grade ¾ students will practice the
Daily 5 reading activities as we learn about expectations for Read-to-Self,
Read-to-Others and Listen to Reading. I will continue conferencing with students
to determine areas of focus for comprehension and each student’s current
reading level.
Word Work- Students will explore ten new words each week
through a variety of activities and will complete a quick quiz at the end of
the week to “show what they know”. A copy of the differentiated Word List can
be found in your child’s Communication Bag.
Numeracy-I will continue conferencing with students to
determine their areas of strength and areas we will work on in Math this year. All
students will explore activities related to patterns in numbers, pictures and
nature. This week students will work both independently and with others, as
well as participate in small-group guided math lessons.
To
practice and improve knowledge of math facts, students complete a 5-minute math
fact recall activity (math drill) each day.
This activity is differentiated for each student and allows students
move on to more challenging facts at their own rate. Please see the attached
Math Facts Handout for you to keep at home.
Social Sciences: This week grade 3 students will explore the
concepts of how to describe where New Brunswick is in the world and in Canada. Grade
4 students will learn more about what exploration is and how we can explore.
Personal Wellness: Students will work in small groups to discuss
classroom expectations/rules and what makes us unique.
Homework
Reading- read aloud (even to yourself!) for at
least 10 minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night. Remember to
have it signed J
Word Work- study word list each night. Try some of
the activities on the Word Work Handout.
Numeracy- Study math facts for 5 minutes each
night and have someone quiz you if possible. Try creating your own flash cards
or playing a math game with someone.
