Week at a Glance         September
10-14, 2018          Grade ¾

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to our first full week of school!
We are off to a great start in
the grade 3 and 4 classroom! Students are excited to be back to school and are
excited about being in a new grade J Below you will find a summary of what we will
be working on this week.

Please check your child’s
Homework/Communication Bag each day for important notices. Marked worksheets
are sent home as an update about what we are currently working on. Please keep
these at home for your own information.

I will collect other work samples throughout
the month and place them in each student’s “Show What We Know Binder”. This
binder will be sent home each month and will include lots of worksheets and
examples of student work from each subject area.

If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact me at shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca.

Sincerely,

                    Areas
of Focus for September 10-14, 2018

Writing- This week, students will meet with me in small groups as
we talk about what good writer’s do and how to choose a topic to write about.

Reading- Students will
meet with me to choose 2 “Good Fit” books to practice reading at home each
night. Please keep these books in the Communication Bag and sign your child’s
Reading Log each night. During Guided Reading, each small group will meet with
me as we read and complete activities using levelled books that match each
students’ reading level.

Word Work- Each student will choose from a
variety of activities related to their word list for the week. For now, we are
reviewing their “No Excuse” words from last year. This child-centered approach
replaces traditional spelling tests.

Numeracy-  Our whole-class lessons this week will focus on a
review of math facts and strategies for adding/subtracting numbers. Students
will work with an addition chart to find patterns within the chart and will practice
using their 120 chart to solve adding/subtracting facts. Students will also
practice rotating between math stations as they play add/subtract math games
with classmates.

Science- This week we will explore ideas and concepts related to
Plant Growth and Changes. Students will learn about plants and their growth
stages through videos, experiments and class activities.

Homework

The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can
be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with
me, please do so! :)

Reading- Students should read aloud (even to themselves!) for 20
minutes each night. Complete the reading log each night and please remember to sign
it and place in the Communication Bag. Talk to your child about what they read
and any Connections they made when reading (memories of experiences, related books
they have read, questions they have etc.)

Numeracy- Grab a deck of cards and play Addition War with your
child. We will be practicing how to play this week. Place cards in a pile and
each draw two cards face up. First person to call out the correct addition sum
gets to collect the cards. All face cards are valued at 10. Player with most
cards at the end wins. Look for a copy of the 120 chart in the Communication Bag
and have your child use coloring pencils to highlight patterns they find.
