Week at a Glance
October 1-5, 2018 Grade ¾
Dear
Parent/Guardian,
Students will be going apple
picking this Friday- please remember to send in $4 toward the cost of the trip.
Thank you for continuing to
check your child’s Homework/Communication Bag each day for important notices.
Marked worksheets are sent home as an update about what we are currently
working on. Please remove worksheets from the bag and keep these at home
for your own information.
Inside your child’s
Communication Bag are two levelled books based on their current reading level.
Please practice reading these with your child each day and sign your child’s Reading Log each
night. Books should be returned to school each day and will be replaced during
the week with new ones. Other homework suggestions are listed below.

reas of Focus for October
1-5, 2018
Writing-
This week, students will complete whole-class activities
using the resources in their Writer’s Toolkit.
Students are also working on more All About Me books. If you would like
to see these, please drop me a line and I will send them home in the
Communication Bag. (shaneen.coes@nbed.nb.ca)
Reading
- Students will
meet with me in small groups during Guided Reading, as we read and complete
activities using levelled books that match each students’ reading level.
Students receive new books at their reading level on Monday and Wednesday this
week. Please practice these at home.
Word
Work-
Each
student will choose from a variety of activities related to their
differentiated word list for the week. We continue to review their “No Excuse”
words from last year. This child-centered approach replaces traditional
spelling tests.
Numeracy-
Our whole-class lessons this week will focus on a
review of skip counting by 5s and 10s. Students will meet with me in small
groups during Guided math as we begin work on our first math assessment.. Grade
3 students will be focusing on: fluency of math facts and place value to 100s. Grade
4s are working on fluency of math facts and place value to 1000s. Everyone will
also have lots of chances to play math games with classmates; our focus during
games this week will be improving our math fact fluency and skip counting.
Science-
This week we will wrap up our unit on Plant Growth and
Changes. Students will discuss the question: Why are some apples red and some
apples green? We will be watching videos related to how apple trees grow and have
an apple taste text experiment after our trip to the orchard on Friday.
Homework
The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can
be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with
me, please do so! :)
Reading
- Students should read aloud (even to themselves!) for 15
minutes each night. Books at their reading level are in their Communication
Bag. They should complete the reading log each night; please remember to sign
