*My apologies for posting this late.

I’m not sure
where September went, but welcome October!

Our
fieldtrip to the apple orchard is this Friday, October 5.  If you have not yet sent in the $4.00 to help
cover the cost, please do so as soon as possible.  Thank you to the Home and School for sponsoring this trip.  We will be outside for most of the day and
the forecast is calling for cool temperatures, so please dress your child
accordingly.

Literacy:   Students now have a calendar page in their
Communication Book that will serve as their reading log.  Please record the title of the book that your
child reads each night. This week we are reading lots of books about apples and
Thanksgiving.

We
are continuing to work on writing recounts that have a beginning, middle and an
ending.  Our Literacy Lead, Mrs. Carr, showed
us how to draw a heart map.  This is a
tool that students can use when they are having trouble coming up with an idea
to write about.  Ask your child to tell
you about their heart map.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 20-24.  You can ask your
child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can
have them create their own representation.
You can also show them a representation (addition or subtraction
equation, picture, tally marks) and ask them if it is correct or not.  If they decide you made a mistake ask them to
show you how to correct it.  This not
only teaches children to be analytical, it also provides an opportunity to model
that we all make mistakes.

This week we will be practicing using expected
behaviour when playing a math game with a partner or small group.  We are continuing to work on repeating
patterns and are revisiting 10 partners (numbers that add to make 10).  Making 10 is a valuable mental math strategy
and one that we practice often.
