Posts: Weekly What’s Up: October 8-12, 2018

I hope
everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
We had a great time at the apple orchard on our field trip. It’s safe to
say that a lot of apples were consumed!

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book
that your child reads each night.  Between
last week’s field trip and the long weekend we will have lots to write about
this week!  The students were excited to
see some Halloween books appearing on the bookshelf.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 25-28.  You can ask your
child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can
have them create their own representation.
You can also show them a representation (addition or subtraction
equation, picture, tally marks) and ask them if it is correct or not.  If they decide you made a mistake ask them to
show you how to correct it.  This not
only teaches children to be analytical, it also provides an opportunity to
model that we all make mistakes.

We are continuing to work on repeating patterns,
identifying even and odd numbers and are revisiting 10 partners (numbers that
add to make 10).  Making 10 is a valuable
mental math strategy and one that we practice often.  The students are having lots of fun using our
pumpkin ten frames to practice (pumpkin ice cube trays from the dollar store).  Add some eye ball ping pong balls and math is
a lot more fun!

Purposeful Play:  Today students worked in groups to make a plan for constructing a play kitchen for the classroom.  We learned about sharing our ideas and listening to the ideas of our groupmates.  Once we finalize our list of needed materials I'll let you know what items we are in need of.
