Posts: Weekly What’s Up: October 15-19, 2018

10/15/2018 3:29 PM by Amanda.Davis

It was certainly
a blustery weekend and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change for the rest
of the week.  Please make sure your child
is coming to school each day prepared for the changing weather.

This is safe schools weeks so we will be practicing our safety procedures throughout the week.

I will be away on Friday, October 19 and
Monday, October 22 and Ms. Robins will be the supply teacher. I will have
access to my email, but if anything urgent arises please contact Mrs. Yerxa
directly.

We are looking
for take-out menus and grocery flyers that we can incorporate into our kitchen
center once we have it built.  If you have
either around the house that you would be willing to send it the class would
appreciate it.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book
that your child reads each night.

Our
No Excuses spelling words for the week are: you, with, they, or and had.  These are words that we are reviewing from
the grade 1 list.  We practice them
throughout the week in variety of ways.
Students are expected to spell these words correctly in their writing.

This
week we are practicing retelling the beginning, middle and end of our read
aloud stories.  You can ask your child to
do this after reading at home as well.
We are working on retelling only the key parts of the story rather than
reciting the story word for word.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 29-33.  You can ask your
child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can
have them create their own representation.
Understanding place value and the different ways a number can be
represented lead to a stronger understanding of addition and subtraction.

We are continuing to work on repeating patterns,
identifying even and odd numbers and are revisiting 10 partners (numbers that
add to make 10).  Making 10 is a valuable
mental math strategy and one that we practice often.  The Halloween fun continues in math this week
with foam stickers for pattern making.
Ask your child to tell you about the 10 partner Scoot! activity that we
did in the gym last Friday.
