                                    Areas of Focus for November
5-November 8, 2018

Writing- This week, students will continue to work on their
independent writing piece and will (hopefully J) bring it home by the end of the week to share.  We will also continue to focus on using proper
punctuation when writing. Students will have lots of opportunities to practice
their punctuation skills this week.

Reading- This week,
students will explore reading strategies and how to apply them when they read.
We will learn about “Checking for Understanding” and “Making Pictures in our
Minds” when we read. Students will have opportunities to practice these strategies
and to talk about how they use them.

Word
Work-
 Students
continue using the Words Their Way program this week.
Each student will complete sorting activities related to their own
differentiated list of words. This child-centered approach replaces traditional
spelling tests and helps students recognize and learn how to apply sound,
pattern, and meaning in their word sorts and other text forms. A copy of their
word list will be in their Communication Bag, as well as a list of suggested
activities to complete at home.

Numeracy- This week will wrap up our study of telling time as
we explore “military time”. Students will also have lots of opportunities to learn
more about the months of the year and how many days each month has. During
Guided math students will also meet with me in small groups as we begin
pre-assessment #3.

Social Studies- This week, all students will
share what they already know about: where do we live/where are we in the world?
We will explore the earth using Google Earth as we learn where we are in
relation to other continents and countries, and provinces within Canada.

Homework

The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can
be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with
me, please do so! :)

Reading- Students should read for 15 minutes each night. Books at
their reading level are in their Communication Bag. They should complete the
reading log each night; please remember to sign it and place in the
Communication Bag. Talk to your child about what they read and any Connections
they made when reading (memories of experiences, related books they have read,
questions they have etc.) BOOKS SHOULD ALWAYS BE KEPT IN THE COMMUNICATION BAG.

Numeracy- Try practicing how to correctly read the clock at home. Convert
the standard time to military time. Try making some flash cards that show
different military times on the front and standard times on the back. Have
someone show them one-at-a-time as you give the other version of time for what
is shown. EX: 21:10 (military time) =9:10pm standard time.

Writing- Have your child
