This week
students will bring home their “Show What You Know” binders. Please take some
time to review and celebrate these with your child, then sign the front page
and return to school.

                                    Areas of Focus for November
26-30, 2018 

 

Writing- This week, students are editing their writing pieces for
Conventions and Word Choice, using the resources in their Writer’s Toolkit.   

 

Reading- This week,
students will explore reading strategies and how to apply them when they read.
We will review what we’ve learned about “Checking for Understanding”,“Making
Pictures in our Minds”  and how to “Back
up and Re-Read” and practice using the strategy of Asking Questions While We
Read. Students will have opportunities to practice these strategies and to talk
about how they use them.

 

Word
Work- Students
continue using the Words Their Way program this week.
Each student will complete sorting activities related to their own
differentiated list of words. This child-centered approach replaces traditional
spelling tests and helps students recognize and learn how to apply sound,
pattern, and meaning in their word sorts and other text forms. A copy of their
word list will be in their Communication Bag. If you would like a new copy of
the “suggested activities” about how to use them, please drop me a line.

 

 
 

Numeracy- This week students review what they have learned
about fractions and how to apply that knowledge. We also begin our unit on
measurement! Students will practice how to use a ruler to accurately measure cm
and will also use their estimation skills!

 

Social Studies- This week, all students will continue
to explore the topic of: where do we live/where are we in the world? We will explore
the locations of our provinces and territories and practice reading a map.

 

Homework

 

The homework assigned is an extension
of class instruction and is meant for extra practice. Completed activities can
be kept at home. However, if there is an activity you would like to share with
me, please do so! :)

 

Reading- Students should read for 15-20 minutes each night. Books
at their reading level are in their Communication Bag. They should complete the
reading log each night; please remember to sign it and place in the
Communication Bag. Talk to your child about what they read and any Connections
they made when reading (memories of experiences, related books they have read,
questions they have etc.) BOOKS SHOULD ALWAYS BE STORED IN THE COMMUNICATION
BAG.

 

 
 

Numeracy- Try breaking out a deck of cards and playing Addition, Subtraction
OR Multiplication with your child. Shuffle the deck, each draw 2 cards face up.
Whoever has the highest sum/difference/multiple, wins the cards played. Repeat
and count to determine the winner at the end. Look for fractions everywhere.
Ex: 9 out of 10 smarties are red; split the pizza into fourths, etc.

 

Writing- Have your child practice
writing at home. They should choose a topic they care about and are interested
in. The following steps can completed at a pace that works for your schedule. Start
by creating a mind-web of ideas to write about and then choose 1-
