Welcome December and all the fun that comes with it!  There will be lots going on over the next few weeks, so please check your child’s communication book every night.  If your child will be bringing their own lunch to MOCO instead of eating the turkey dinner, please let me know so we can send our numbers to the restaurant. Thank you to the Home and School for sponsoring this activity.

This week in addition to learning about Christmas traditions from other parts of the world we’ll be learning about Hanukkah.

Today students brought home a sheet to complete with you about your family traditions.  Please jot down a few special traditions you have and return the page by Friday.  Students will use it to complete a writing activity next week.

Literacy:   Please remember to record the title of the book that your child reads each night.  Your child should be bringing home a book to read each night.

Our No Excuses words for this week are: if, look, play, this and will.

The class is loving our novel, A Ghost at Christmas Time.  Today we read a chapter by the fireplace (Smartboard). We are learning lots about the differences between modern and Victorian times as the story involves the writing of A Christmas Carol.  This also fits in with our YAYW unit on changes in technology and community.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 59-63.  You can ask your child to show you a representation that we came up with in class or you can have them create their own representation.  You can also practice skip counting to that number.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus one facts, on representing numbers to 50 in several different ways and adding and subtracting two digit and one digit numbers.  We are also learning about equality and inequality and how to represent equal and not equal groups.  There are lots of opportunities to practice counting, sorting and adding/subtracting in regards to the holidays.  Baking with your child is another great Christmas activity that involves lots of math learning.
