Posts: Weekly What’s Up: January 7-11, 2019

Welcome
2019!  I hope everyone enjoyed the
Christmas break and that you were able to make lots of memories.

We were sad
that we didn’t get to say a final goodbye to Twinkle before Christmas.  During the last week of school she brought
little gift bags that I labelled with the students’ names.  When they had a free moment the students were
able to write a kind note and put it in someone’s bag to give the gift of
kindness.

I introduced
the class to Kerplunk and a new
strategy game called OK Play
today.  Both were a hit!  I know we just had Christmas, but there is a
sale on games at Toys R Us this week ;)
Children learn so much while playing board/card games (plus it’s a great
family activity).

Literacy:   I have
decided not to continue with the reading log calendars.  Please continue to listen to your child read/read
to them each night.  The goal is not only
to build their skills as a reader, but also to build on their love of reading.

The
class voted for our next class novel to be The Mouse and the Motorcycle.  It’s always one of my favourite novels to
read.

We
will wait till next week to start new No Excuses words.  In writing this week we will be writing about
our Christmas break and finishing up our Christmas tradition writing.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 72-75.  You can ask your
child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to that
number, make and addition or subtraction equation with that number as the
answer, etc.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus
one facts and on representing numbers to 100 in several different ways.  We are also learning about equality and
inequality and how to represent equal and not equal groups.  Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and
10s at home as I’ll be introducing coins soon.
