Posts: Weekly What’s Up: February 4-8, 2019

Good bye January, hello February!  Despite the groundhog’s prediction on Saturday I’m hoping that this new month will bring us some nicer weather.  We were all excited to get outside for recess today!  This week looks like it could be a bit soggy so please send extra mittens and socks with your child.

This time of year seems to be when feet decide to grow and shoes begin to wear out.  Please check with your child to see how their shoes are fitting and if they are wearing out.  If they have slip on shoes please make sure your child is able to run in them safely for gym class.

February is always a busy month with lots of special events happening.  Please check your child’s Communication Bag nightly for notices and return necessary papers as soon as possible.

We have explored what adding heat does to water (liquid to a gas) and to a honey bear (solid to a liquid).  This week we will experiment with taking heat away.

Be sure to check Twitter tomorrow afternoon as I will be posting about our Chinese New Year assembly.  Grade 2 has a special part to play!

Literacy:  Please continue to listen to your child read/read to them each night.  The goal is not only to build their skills as a reader, but also to build on their love of reading.  Progress can only happen with practice!

Our No Excuses words for this week are: because, into, make, than and who.  We will continue learning about contractions.  While you are reading you can have your child look for contractions and ask them what words were put together to make that contraction.  We will be reading books about the Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day this week.

In writing we are going to begin learning about dialogue.  This is a skill we will work on for quite a while as using quotation marks takes lots of practice.  We are also working on stretching out our ideas to include lots of details and on using commas when listing things.

Math:  This week our numbers will be 87-91.  You can ask your child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to that number, make an addition or subtraction equation with that number as the answer, etc.  We have started using coins to represent our number of the day as well.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus one facts and on representing numbers to 100 in several different ways.  Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Students are continuing to work on identifying coins by their name and value.  I am reissuing the challenge to find the oldest coin they can by Friday.  We had two come in last week and the oldest was from 1997.  This should be a coin that they find around the house, in the car, in a change jar… anything but a rare/special coin.  We are also working on words problems.  Some students are beginning to work on adding two digit numbers while others are continuing to work on building their mental math strength with sums to 20.  We are also working on answering questions about the calendar.
