Posts: Weekly What’s Up: February 11-15, 2019

Another
short week last week.  I wonder what this
week will bring.

We had lots
of fun learning about Chinese New Year last week and this week will be all
about Valentine’s Day.  On Thursday we
will have our Valentine’s Day party and students can exchange cards.  The school will be providing fruit and
vegetable trays for each class.  Please
follow the link below if you would like to send in something for our class
party.

On Thursday
we will be experimenting with solids and liquids by doing the best kind of
science: edible science!  We will be
making Jello jigglers in the morning to enjoy at our party.  Hopefully all that we’ve learned about dissolving,
adding and taking away heat will come together for this tasty experiment.

Happy
birthday to Blake on Wednesday!

Literacy:  Please continue to listen to your child read/read
to them each night.  When you are reading
with your child try stopping throughout the book to ask them questions about
what is happening, how they think the characters are feeling and if there are
words that they don’t understand.  Understanding
what we read is more important than being able to read it accurately.

Our
No Excuses words for this week are: asked,
just, now, over
and their.  We will continue learning about
contractions.  While you are reading you
can have your child look for contractions and ask them what words were put
together to make that contraction.  We
will be reading books about Valentine’s Day this week.

In
writing we are continuing to work on adding details to our recounts and on
making our message clear for our readers when we do free choice writing.  Last week we wrote notes to friends in other
classes to wish them good fortune in the new year.  I anticipate there will be more note writing
this week.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 91-95.  You can ask your
child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to that
number, make an addition or subtraction equation with that number as the
answer, etc.  We have started using coins
to represent our number of the day as well.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus
one facts and on representing numbers to 100 in several different ways.  Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and
10s. Students are continuing to work on identifying coins by their name and
value.  The oldest coin that a student
has been able to find and bring to class has been a nickel from 1993 which was
calculated was 26 years old. We are also working on words problems.  My quarter from 1978 is still in first place!  Some students are beginning to work on adding
two digit numbers while others are continuing to work on building their mental
math strength with sums to 20.
