Posts: Weekly What’s Up: February 25- March 1, 2019

Another
short week last week!  I guess we just
weren’t meant to have a full week of school in February L
While we have missed several days this year, there is still lots of the
school year left and we are on track curriculum wise.

We are
excited to welcome Bentley back to our class this week.  When we return from March Break we will be
welcoming a new student, Jayden, to our little family.

We had a
great time last week at the Superstore.
We learned about the 3 star rating system, which body parts/systems
benefit from the different colours of produce and the importance of making
informed food choices.  We bought ingredients
for blueberry muffins, which we baked and shared with the rest of the school
the next day.  During baking we talked
about fractions and the importance of reading a recipe accurately.  Real life application of literacy and math
lessons are the best!

Literacy:  Please continue to listen to your child read/read
to them each night.  When you are reading
with your child try stopping throughout the book to ask them questions about
what is happening, how they think the characters are feeling and if there are
words that they don’t understand.  We are
focusing on making personal connections to the story during our read
alouds.

Our
No Excuses words for this week are: after,
before, could, some
and when.  We will continue learning about
contractions.  While you are reading you
can have your child look for contractions and ask them what words were put
together to make that contraction.  We
will be reading books about Valentine’s Day this week.

In
writing we are working on adding details to our writing using adjectives.  We want to paint a picture in the reader’s
head.  They are loving writing ‘stretch
sentences’.  I give them a simple
sentence and they write their own detailed version.  When we share with the class we can see how
different people can interpret the same thing in different ways.      Ex: The girl ate.

The little girl ate
breakfast with her mom in the early morning at a hotel.
This would be a great activity to practice over
the break as it’s quick and can even be done verbally while you wait in line at
the grocery store.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 99-102.  You can ask your
child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to that number,
make an addition or subtraction equation with that number as the answer, etc.  We have started using coins to represent our
number of the day as well.

We decided to celebrate the 100th day of
school today (even though it’s only day 99).
We estimated quantities, did activities with the hundreds chart and had
a special scavenger hunt.

We are continuing to work on doubles and doubles plus
one facts and on representing numbers to 100 in several different ways.  Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and
10s. Students are continuing to work on identifying coins by their name and
value.  Some students are beginning to
work on adding two digit numbers while others are continuing to work on
building their mental math strength with sums to 20.

Our math lead Mrs. Thomas introduced us to a website
that the class loved!  Gregtangmath.com
has several games that are at our level and the website will work on a
tablet.  If you’re looking for extra
practice over the break you can also play abcya.com on a desktop/laptop.  It’s another favourite.
