Weekly
What’s Up: March 25-29 , 2019

It’s so nice
to see the snow melting!  Please remember
to send an extra pair of socks and mitts with your child as I foresee a lot of
soggy recesses in the future.  Students
are also welcome to leave a change of clothes in the classroom.

This week
and next we will be working on self-assessing and goal setting in preparation
for Student Led Conferences.  Your child
will have a selection of their work to share with you as they discuss their
learning. Appointment confirmation slips will be sent home in the report card
envelop.  I look forward to seeing you
and your child.

Literacy:  Please continue to listen to your child read/read
to them each night.  When you are reading
with your child try stopping throughout the book to ask them questions about
what is happening, how they think the characters are feeling and if there are
words that they don’t understand.  We are
focusing on making personal connections to the story during our read alouds.  Does the story remind of something that has
happened to you?  Do the characters
remind you of anyone you know?

We
are reviewing nouns, verbs and adjectives during word work.

In
writing we are working on adding details to our writing using adjectives.  We want to paint a picture in the reader’s
head.  We are also working on editing our
writing pieces.  Last week I introduced
the students to a new tool that we’ll be using in literacy.  Eetchy the Caterpillar is designed to help
students expand their vocabulary and knowledge.
We are using Eetchy during read alouds and will begin using him during
writing this week.

Math:
 This week our
numbers will be 112-116.  You can ask
your child to show you the number as tens and ones, get them to skip count to
that number, make an addition or subtraction equation with that number as the
answer, etc.

We are continuing to work on representing numbers to
100 in several different ways.  Please
practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Students are continuing to work on
identifying coins by their name and value.
Some students are working on adding two digit numbers while others are
continuing to work on building their mental math strength with sums to 20.  We’re beginning to work on solving and
writing our own word problems.  We will
continue working on our measurement unit.
