Posts: Science test on Friday!!

1/26/2014 2:32 PM by krista.mclaughlin

We will be having a science test this Friday, Jan. 31st
for our unit on properties and changes in materials.  Here are some things you will need to
remember for the test.

The three different states of matter (solid, liquid and gas),
examples of each, and properties of each.

Solids:  have a
definite shape, and do not usually mix easily with other solids.  Their molecules are almost completely still
and very close together.

Liquids:  do not have
a definite shape, but take on the shape of the container they are in.  Molecules move faster in liquids than in
solids, and when heat is applied to a liquid, it becomes a gas.

Gases:  They sometimes
cannot be seen or smelled, however many gases do have an odor.  They take up as much space as possible, and their
molecules move very quickly.

Chemical changes (when solids, liquids, or gases experience
a change that cannot be undone – for example mixing vinegar and baking soda to
produce carbon dioxide, or having a campfire – applying heat to the wood and
turning it to ash.  This kind of change
causes the molecules of the matter to either speed up or slow down.)

Physical changes (a change in matter that can usually be
undone – for example allowing an ice cube to thaw and then re-freezing it, or
pulling apart a piece of play dough.
Physical changes do not permanently affect the molecules in the solid, liquid, or
gas.)

The difference between natural products and manufactured
products, and examples of each.

You will also need to know about the experiments we have
done in class.  Please use your notes to
study!  Good luck, and happy studying!
