We have started a new unit on squares, square roots and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Homework tonight:  Pg. 10 #19, Pg. 15, #7, 10, 13, 14, 15

So far we have covered the following terms:

perfect square numbers - numbers that you can made a square out of if you used (for example) graph paper.  The following are the first commonly known perfect squares

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225

squaring a number - just means taking a number and multiplying it by itself.  We square a number to get a perfect square number.  e.g. 3 squared equals 9  OR 3 to the power of 2 equals 9  OR 32 =9 .

Powers - a power is just a number raised to a certain exponent e.g. 32  (the entire thing is a power)

Base and exponent - the number that is being squared e.g. 32 (3 is the base), 2 is the exponent

Square root - the number that represents that multiplies by itself to give a perfect square e.g. 3 is the square root of 9, 5 is the square root of 25, 10 is the square root of 100

Radical sign - The symbol for taking a square root is called the radical sign.  It looks like this:

Here are some examples from the board that we worked on and discussed:
