Posts: Cells and Membranes

Yesterday we continued with looking at the scientific method and how it is used to conduct experiments in a repeatable and testable way.  We watched a short video about the scientific method and it gave some really good examples of students using the scientific method.  Remember the girl who studied ants and the boy who looked at the absorption of water in different types of soil.

The Scientific Method:

1. start with a testable question (usually in the form "How does _______ affect ________?"

2. Make a hypothesis (an educated guess)

3. Design and conduct  an experiment (to test your hypothesis)

4. Analyze your results

5. make a conclusion

Today we looked at the importance of membranes for cells and looked at how membranes are a double surface (like two plastic bags inside each other, or the two layers of a 2 ply kleenex.  We then went to the lab and looked at onion cells and cheek cells using microscopes and iodine to stain the cells.
