Try a New Food Week at Back Bay Elementary

Students at Back Bay Elementary School recently participated in a 2-week food challenge.  Each day a different teacher prepared a healthy, affordable food for students to try.  There were three rules for the Try a New Food Week:  (1) you should try it but you don't need to like it, (2) it had to be sourced locally at the community's only grocery store, and (2) it had to be affordable enough that parents could buy it to include in student's lunches.

Foods ranged from smoothies and exotic fruits to roasted veggies and water flavored with fresh fruit and herbs.  Students met in the gym for 15 minutes each morning to be introduced to the food, educated about its nutritional benefits and talk about which food group it belonged to and how the food can be prepared.  Each week classroom teachers communicated with parents to let them know what food were introduced and how that food could be incorporated into family mealtime and school lunches.
Teachers were thrilled to report that even their classroom's pickiest eaters were willing to try the food that their classmates were trying.
