Careers and Technology in the Automotive Industry


Topic Description:

This topic will entail students researching careers and related technologies in the automotive industry. Students will complete one assignment from each of the following learning units.


Objective/ Outcome:

Students will identify various careers and education opportunities related to the automotive industry. Students will gain a better understanding of the current demands for skilled labor forces. By using real time job postings and post-secondary websites available online, students will be able to learn about the current employment and education opportunities in the country. This learning unit also provides opportunities for students to learn about new types of alternative energy within the context of automotive education.

Group Size:

Students may choose to work in groups of two or individually on this project.

Required Materials, Equipment and Software:

Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, CDX Automotive, or other software approved by instructor prior to project.




LEARNING UNIT 1


Career Identification: Internet Research Assignment

To complete this unit, research and identify a minimum of 10 careers related to the automotive industry. Also, provide a brief description of each career and the education required to work in each field of employment. Use Internet Explorer to compile career research. Then complete the assignment for submission on a Word Document using Microsoft Word. Remember to include the URL of all websites used while researching on a bibliography page. Be creative with your choices!

LEARNING UNIT 2


Understanding Automotive Careers: Power Point Assignment

Using the information from your research completed for Learning Unit 1 as a resource, choose 1 career and create a PowerPoint presentation that expands to further describe this career.

Assignment must include:

  • Rate of pay
  • Job availability in any region of interest.

LEARNING UNIT 3


In-Depth Assignments   (choose only one)

*NOTE: Complete only 1 of the 4 options listed below.

  • Option 1: Interview  Interview someone that works in the automotive field. This project may be a recorded interview, written notes, or a combination of both.
  • Option 2: Mechanic vs. Technician  Using a Word document, explain the difference between an automotive mechanic and an automotive service technician?
  • Option 3: Dream Resume  Create a fictional resume and cover letter with the intention of applying for your “Dream Job in Automotive”. Look on Canada Job Bank website (www.jobbank.gc.ca) and find your dream job or jobs. Remember when completing resume and cover letter to list all skills and education possessed that may be required to be a candidate for your dream job. The resume must show where you hypothetically went to school for accreditation.
  • Option 4: Technology  Using a Word document, identify and research a recent technological advancement used in the automotive industry. This may be a technology that is implemented in the design and eventual construction of automobiles; or technology that is used to create automotive tools for maintenance, performance, or assembly.

Automobiles are quickly changing due to the major advancements in technology. This created a huge impact on what source of energy is used to power the automobile. Due to the rising costs of gasoline we are beginning to see a lot more alternatively powered vehicles.

LEARNING UNIT 5


Understanding automotive systems

There are no assignments to complete in this Learning Unit; although it is essential you look at the various information and animations throughout the entire unit in order to gain a better understanding of the main components of a vehicle.

This unit looks further into the vehicle's systems, including steering, suspension, braking, engines and mechanics.

BUILDING YOUR OWN RACE CAR

From your observations throughout Learning Units 4 and 5, you must design and build a self-propelled race car. After project completion, you will enter your car in several competitions against other classmate’s cars. Who will have the best car?

It is very important to perform research before you begin to design your project.

GUIDELINES: Self-propelled Race Car Project


It is your task to design and build a self-propelled race car. Planning and research is essential for this type of project. The car will be expected to have a chassis that is able to hold all the essential requirements for this car, including wheels, axles, and a power source. After project completion, you will enter your car in several competitions against other classmate’s cars.
