Exam Schedule

Once again, the exam schedule for next week is attached to this email.  You will note that Friday is set aside in case of a cancellation due to weather.  All exams move forward one day if school is cancelled for any reason.
In the case of a 1-hour bus delay, morning exams will begin at 10:00.  Afternoon exams will run as scheduled.
For students who write only a morning exam, we provide a bus which will leave HVHS at 12:15 each day, travel through the west side and up to the flashing light in Westfield.  It cannot take students to their regular stops, but helps to get students closer to home without having to wait until the end of day bus runs.  All other buses continue to run their regular schedules during the week.
In the case of a weather event, we will update exam information through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as soon as we can in the morning – and also send the information out via email.
Electronic Devices Policy
Through our Student Perception Survey this fall, we asked students a question specifically related to interruptions due to cell phone use.  82% of students reported that teachers had to interrupt their teaching at least weekly due to cell phone use, while 54% said interruptions happened daily or each period.  This is clearly detrimental to student learning.
Beginning second semester, the attached Electronic Devices Policy will be in place.    HVHS Electronic Devices Policy.pdf
It outlines when it is appropriate for students to use their devices, and the consequences for using them at other times.  Please take time to read the attachment.  It will be reviewed in detail with all students on the first day of Semester 2.
The following link provides a good overview of the benefits and challenges of electronic devices in classrooms.  We hope our new policy addresses the final piece of advice in the article – to set clear ground rules to help students use devices in order to take advantage of the benefits, while eliminating as many of the negative effects as possible.  https://www.oxfordlearning.com/should-cell-phones-be-allowed-classrooms/

Ski/Snowboard Club
Please be advised that cheques will be deposited early next week.
Also, there will be no trip to Poley next week as students are writing exams. The next trip will take place on Tuesday, January 29.
