Weekly News Letter

We had a great first week back to school for students.  Tuesday was a great introduction for our new Grade 9 and international students.  This afternoon was our annual Maroon Mania – such a fun way to end the week.

School Photos

School photos will take place on Wednesday, September 18.

Undergraduate Awards Ceremony

Our annual ceremony to recognize last year’s Honours and High Honours students will take place the morning of Tuesday, September 17.   Letters will go home next week with all award recipients regarding details of the event and an RSVP form for parents/guardians.  Lists of winners are posted in the main hall.  If your students feels there is an error with the list, please have them see Mrs. Curwin.  We do not want to miss anyone who deserves to be recognized!

Vaping

Our school district now has consistent consequences for all high schools for students who are found to be vaping within schools, on buses, or on school property including a 1-day suspension for the first offence, with increasing consequences beyond that.  There are increasing concerns with the health risks associated with vaping, and the large spike in usage by teens.  Here is a bit of information:

vaping and juling – 101

·      Vaping products, such as e-cigarettes or JUULs, named for the popular brand, are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale, or vape, aerosolized liquid (e-juice).  The liquid comes in flavors, such as mint, cotton candy, and bubble gum. Vape devices can look like regular cigarettes, cigars or pipes, while others are designed to be “discreet” and resemble USB sticks, guitar picks, lipstick tubes, etc.

·      These devices are often marketed as smoking cessation products and are thought to be less harmful then cigarettes. In reality, the chemicals used in vaping have been found to cause lung disease, and the long-term effect on health is still unknown.

·      Users are often unaware that most vaping products contain nicotine, and therefore believe vaping to be less dangerous than using other tobacco products, such as cigarettes. Nicotine is known to be highly addictive and harmful to the developing adolescent brain, and the amount of nicotine in vaping liquid can be the same or even more than the amount found in cigarettes.

·      Despite being marketed as a smoking cessation product studies have shown that as many as 36% of student vapers have never smoked a cigarette. (Health Canada’s Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey 2016-2017) and that those who vape are 4x more likely to use cigarettes or other tobacco products later in life.

PowerSchool

Parents of returning students should now have access to PowerSchool to keep up to date with attendance and marks.  For any new student, a blue form was sent home on the first day of school which you can return to request access.  We will start to process those returned forms next week and provide access to these students and their guardians.

Student Fees

Just a reminder that a $40 Student Fee should be paid as soon as families are able.  These fees help to fund activities like today’s Maroon Mania, guest speakers, co- and extra-curricular activities, locker maintenance and more.  You are encouraged to pay through SchoolCashOnline – a link can be found on the Harbour View High School website:  hvhs.nbed.nb.ca

Any student whose fees are paid by September 30 will be entered into a draw for some HVHS swag.

Daily Announcements

Our morning announcements can be found through PowerSchool each day by clicking on the Daily Bulletin link.

Cell Phone Policy – contacting students

Parents are reminded that students are not permitted to use cell phones during instructional time – including answering calls or responded to texts from parents.  If you need to contact a student for an urgent matter, please phone our main office at 658-5359 and we will ensure they get the message to contact you.  Otherwise, they are free to respond during non-instructional time.
