Forest Hills School

We Build Inclusion, Capacity, and Learning Communities

September 22nd,  2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

First of all, sorry for the wait on hot lunch.  We will be collecting hot lunch orders on October 5th for our first week of food on the 10th.  As in the past, we will be collecting exact change, but will be moving to a cashless system and will keep you updated.

Our grade 7 immunization clinic will be held on Tuesday the 26th.

We will be participating in our school wide Terry Fox walk on Thursday afternoon.  Please bring in a “Toonie for Terry” and support cancer research!

On Friday, we are asking our students to wear orange shirts as a symbol of the wrongs done by the residential school system to Aboriginal children and communities. We will be collecting house points for participation.

Elementary School Photo Day will be on October 11th and Middle School photo day will be on October 12th.

Don’t forget to return your yellow “Drive one 4 Your PALS School” slip by Thursday the 28th to be entered in a draw.  You are under no obligation to buy, but every test drive on Saturday, September 30th will earn $20 for FHS!  Come support our school!

Remember Falcons, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe!

Have a nice weekend,

Forest Hills School

We Build Inclusion, Capacity, and Learning Communities

September 15th, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

First half day for students, Wednesday September 20th.  K-8 walking students (pick-up, daycare, etc.) will be dismissed at 11:30.  All bussing students will be called down as the busses arrive.

Saturday Sept 16 has been designated Becca Scholfield day in New Brunswick. She is a recent graduate from Riverview High in Moncton. She was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and wanted to leave a legacy of people being kind to one another.

Please encourage your child and family to commit at least 1 Act of Kindness this coming Saturday for Becca.  On Monday each class will get a coloured set of ballots. And We will send our number of Acts of Kindness to Riverview High School for Becca.  The Beccatoldme website has additional information if you’re interested.

Just a reminder that children can’t go home on a friend’s bus.  If there is a family emergency, they you would need to contact the office and we will complete the proper paperwork.

We will be practicing our lockdown procedures Monday morning.  Teachers have taken the time to practice this emergency procedure this week and the students are aware that there will be a drill on Monday.

Our first grade 6-8 dance will be next Thursday from 6-8PM.  The cost is $3 and it’s always lots of fun!

Please don’t use the bus drop off zone out front to drop off or pick up students during arrival and dismissal times.  It gets very congested and it is a safety issue.  Please drop off in the back of the school.

Just an update on our hot lunch.  We are hard at work securing volunteers to get our program up and running.  We are hopeful that we will be taking orders the last week of September, but will keep you updated.

There will be a parent hockey meeting in the middle school library on Thursday, September 21st from 7-9.

Remember Falcons, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe!

Forest Hills School

We Build Inclusion, Capacity, and Learning Communities

September 8th, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

It’s hard to believe we have the first week under our belts.  Please be sure to keep in touch with your children’s teachers over the year regarding their progress. Also, please never hesitate to contact the school.

Reminder to gr. 3-5 students that our cross country meet is Thursday, September 14th.  Any student interested in running must return their permission slip to Miss Parsons by Tuesday at the latest.  Parents are asked to respect parking rules at Rockwood Park and not park on the road as we don't want to block access for emergency vehicles.  Thank you for your cooperation.  Carpooling is suggested if possible.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience with bussing this week. We are hopeful that most of the bugs have been worked out and that next week will run more smoothly.  Please make sure you log on to the new system for phone alerts and bussing information specific to your children.

We are looking for volunteers for our breakfast program, breakfast bins, hot lunch program, and in other areas of the school.  If you or a family member are able to help at the school, please let us know as soon as possible.  We would be unable to provide all of the extra student services we do without the support of our volunteers.  Thank you!

Please make sure that you fill out and return information sheets, student contact forms, medical plans, or any other forms that were sent home this week, as soon as possible.  Also, we’d appreciate several different contact numbers and an email address.

If you are wondering why our flags are at half-mast, commencing this year, there will be a new annual half-masting to recognize the Firefighters’ National Memorial Day. This new half-masting will take place on the second Sunday in September.

Forest Hills School

We Build Inclusion, Capacity, and Learning Communities

September 1st, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

Thank you all for joining us for our PSSC/Open House!  We had between 400 and 500 people attend.  What a great way to start the year!

With the start of school in mind, we have a couple of important items to mention:

1)   Bussing:  We are very happy to have the new busing system in ASD-S, but there are some bugs to work out at this point.  We’d ask that all parents check bussing information on the ASD-S website tonight or over the weekend to ensure that there haven’t been any changes.  On the ASD-S website, click on “Find my bus route,” click transportation eligibility, enter your address, grade level, program of study, and click submit.  This memo is posted on our website and directions are recorded on our phone line. We appreciate your patience.

2)   First Day: All grade 1-8 students will start on Tuesday the 5th. K walking students only will start on the 5th and K bussing students only will start on the 6th.  All K students will attend on the 7th.

3)   Class Assignments: We have made every effort to have the first day and following weeks run as smoothly as possible for your children.  That being said, we always have several students move in and out of our school zone over the summer.  Due to class size and composition, please be aware that we may need to change class assignment during the first few weeks of school.

4)   We are happy to let you know that the breakfast program will be up and running at 8:15 on the first day of school.  For those of you not familiar with the program, it is open to all K-8 students in the middle level cafeteria where we serve toast, milk, fruit and at times other breakfast items.

We’re looking forward to another great year here at Forest Hills!  Please remember if you every have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us!

August 25th, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the summer break.  It’s hard to believe that the students will be back to school very shortly! Enjoy those last few days!

I just wanted to remind FHS families that we will be hosting our PSSC and Open House Event next Wednesday evening starting at 5:30.  We will gather in the main gym briefly before visiting classrooms.  We are very fortunate to have the Saint John Y Service Club and Loyalist City Rib Fest 2017 sponsor our BBQ this year.  We will end our evening with a BBQ and music in the back yard.  This is a fun way to kick off the year, while also meeting the teacher and hearing a bit about curriculum.  We have found it alleviates a lot of first day stress for students to get to see their classroom ahead and drop off their supplies.  We hope to see you there!

The Saint John Ex will be hosting a free 1 mile run/walk on Thursday, August 31st with the chance to win $1000 to donate toward their team of choice.  One of our students won last year and donated it to the school for new basketballs and pinnies.  Make sure you check it out!

ASD-S has a new web service for transportation called “Bus Planner.”  We would encourage all parents to register for this service.  Not only can you search for your child’s bus information, you can sign up on the parent portal and receive alerts on your child’s bus regarding late buses, cancellations, break downs, etc.  You will need your child’s student number to register, so we will send those home the first week.

Finally, I wanted to send a reminder to the guardians of Kindergarten students that there is a staggered entry.  Walking students only will attend on Tuesday the 5th and bus students only will attend on Wednesday the 6th.  All K students will go to school on Thursday the 7th.  The first day for all of our grade 1-8 students is Tuesday the 5th

We’re looking forward to another great year here at Forest Hills!  Please remember if you every have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us!

June 23rd, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

Thank you for another great school year here at FHS!

We have a few items I’d like to share:

The City is still looking for the community’s feedback about a possible splash pad at FHS.  Any feedback you can give will help us get the best outcome for our children.  This is a fantastic opportunity. Please take a moment to complete their online survey at www.saintjohn.ca/foresthills .  They are looking for feedback on what the splash pad should include, lighting, city bus stops, a possible addition of a skate park, and anything else that you can think of.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Parks & Recreation or Councilor Strowbridge directly.

If you are interested in hosting an international student next year, starting in September, please contact Maggie Power the AEI Homestay Coordinator at 693 7447 (h) or 343 3575 (c).  Thank you!

If you didn’t have a chance to pick up report cards, they will be available in the office on Monday and Tuesday.

School supply lists are posted on our website.  Also, please mark your calendars for our PSSC Election/Open House that will be on Wednesday, August 30th, 5:30-7:30.  This is a great opportunity to meet the teacher and drop off school supplies.  We find this helps a lot for overcoming first day of school anxiety!

Thank you for a great year and remember Falcons, be respectful, be responsible, and be safe!

Have a wonderful summer,

Tomorrow is our annual activity morning.  Please remember to have your children wear comfy shoes, a hat and sunblock.  Lunch is provided by our fabulous Home & School.  Students should still bring snacks and a drink.

The grade 8 celebration is also tomorrow night.  I had said that we’d enter the school at 5:15, but we will actually enter the lobby for refreshments at 5.  The dance that follows is from 6-8PM and is for grades 6-8, with grade 6 and 7 students being invited into the school at 6PM.

Thank you,

June 17th, 2017

This is a message from Mrs. Savoie, principal at Forest Hills School.

It’s hard to believe that we’re headed into the last week of school!  We have lots of different trips and school based activities planned for this week.

Our annual fun day will be on Thursday morning and Home & School will be providing pizza.  Please bring something to drink, comfy shoes and wear sun block!

The Grade 8 end of year celebration will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at 5:15 and the final grade 6-8 dance will be from 6-8PM.

As you know, the last day of school, June 23rd, will be a half day for students.  We will be dismissing students at 11:45 and busses will be arriving as soon as they can after that.  Home Reports will only be given to students at dismissal time.  If a parent would like to pick it up earlier on Friday, the parent can do so.  They can also be picked up in the office on the 26th or 27th, 9-3.

There was a community meeting at FHS on Wednesday regarding a proposal for a Splash Pad to be built at FHS.  The City is looking for the community’s feedback.  Any feedback you can give will help us get the best outcome for our children.  This is a fantastic opportunity. Please take a moment to complete their online survey at www.saintjohn.ca/foresthills .  They are looking for feedback on what the splash pad should include, lighting, city bus stops, washrooms, a possible addition of a skate park, and anything else that you can think of.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Parks & Recreation or Councillor Strowbridge directly.

Thank you for your understanding regarding the grade 3-8 students being late coming home today.  As I had mentioned in my earlier talk mail, we had to call emergency services for a student at the end of the day and needed to keep the halls clear and front lot.  The student will be ok!

The Help Us to Help Them Club is having a “Twin Day” on June the 14th.  Bring in a small donation to support the Children’s Wish Foundation and you and your friend can dress like twins!

The grade 7 and 8 Book Club Celebration will be on Wednesday the 14th.

The Grade 8 end of year celebration will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at 5:15 and the final grade 6-8 dance will be from 6-8PM.

Our Annual FHS Night of the Arts was a huge success! Our students and staff performers and artists did an amazing job.  Our Hillsong choir and parents also honoured Mr. Goguen for all of his hard work and dedication by presenting him with a guitar and a wall hanging and by sharing some lovely words.  It was a great night!
