This is a message from Mrs. Blanchard, Principal at Hampton Elementary School. Here is your weekly edition of the HES Hawk Squawk.
The word of the week was turbulent which means rough or stormy. Thank you to our teachers for sharing information and lessons with our students on what it means to be a responsible technology user in support of Internet Safety Week. If you haven’t had the opportunity to do so, please have a conversation with your child about what they can do to protect themselves in an online world.
There are no factors more important to successful school progress than regular and punctual school attendance. Students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who do not. Families who make regular school attendance a priority are also helping their children learn to accept responsibility, and that’s an important lesson for a successful life. At the end of each month, we verify attendance for every student and letters will be sent home to families whose children have missed more than 10 days (including excused absences). This week marks the half-way point of the school year and instruction only continues to increase in rigor.
Science East: On Monday we are welcoming Science East from Fredericton with their Planetarium presentation. This event is sponsored by the Bilingual Learning Environment Grant and presentations will take place in both French and English.
Valentine’s Day and SJ RipTide Visit: On Tuesday, students are welcome to wear Pink or Red if they want to. If students wish to exchange Valentine’s, they may but they must bring one for every member of the class. If your child does not wish to make cards, they do not have to. During our weekly assembly that day, we are welcoming the Saint John Rip Tide Basketball Team for a motivational speaking presentation.
News from the HOME & SCHOOL: The new healthy lunch menu for March is now open for orders.  All orders & payments are due on Feb 20th and that if anyone wants to register the link can be found on the HES website. The plans for staff appreciation are coming along nicely. Thank you to Laura, Tammy and Danielle and their team who have been spearheading this event. If you are able to contribute, please email: hes.homeandschool@gmail.com The schedule for the week is:
Monday – Lunch provided to staff (soup/chili and rolls)
Tuesday – Cookies & Sweets
Wednesday – Cheese/Meats and Crackers & dips
Thursday – Coffee, Muffins and Breads
Friday – Fruit and Vegetables
Coming up next week: Feb 20-24th
22nd Pink Shirt Day
24th – Professional Learning Day for staff (no school for students)

Our weekly Hawk Squawk is always posted on our school website under the Synrevoice tab!

Have a great weekend!

Heritage Week in NB This year Heritage Week in NB is Feb. 13 – Feb. 20 and the Kings Co. Museum wants to help celebrate by hosting a Heritage Contest for students at local area schools, including Hampton Elementary School.
How students can participate: The Kings Co. Museum has a blog called 100 Hidden Histories which can be viewed at 100HiddenHistories.blogspot.ca. Here’s the task:  students will find an object in their family that is at least 50 years old and write a short story about it.  Here is what should be included:
  • A description of what the object is
  • What is its use
  • Where it was made
  • Who it belonged to (has it been passed down from generation to generation)
  • Why is it still in their family
  • What it means to them
  • Any other interesting fact about the object
All submissions should be submitted in either MS Word or PDF format and be no longer than one page.  Pictures of the object from different angles need to be included as well, including any markings or engravings on the object. There will be one winner from each area school and the prize will be a $25 gift certificate from a local business.  The best submissions will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.  Other submissions will be shared via our Facebook page.
How to enter: Students must email their work to the museum at kingscm@nbnet.nb.ca by end of day Thursday, Feb. 9.  The following information needs to be included:
  • Student name, School the student attends, What grade the student is in.
  • Name of the student’s homeroom teacher.
  • Email address where the student can be contacted for prize notification.  The Kings Co. Museum will also use this email address to notify students if their submission will be included in our 100 Hidden Histories blog in 2017.
  • The write-up of the object (maximum one page) submitted in MS Word of PDF format.
  • Pictures of the object.
Winners will be notified through the email address they used to send their entry and you will be copied.  Arrangements will be made to have their certificates and prizes presented to them by a member of the Kings Co. Historical and Archival Society.
