First Hawk Squawk 2018-2019
Good afternoon H.E.S. Hawk families,
We hope everyone is having a relaxing summer vacation with family and friends. We look forward to having all the children back with us in a couple short weeks!
Below please find information regarding our All Inclusive student fee, Back to School Social /Meet the Teacher event as well as information on busing and first day procedures.
School Fees 2018-2019
Amount
Explanation
$60
(same as previous years)
Parents who responded to a school wide survey (implemented Sept. 2016) indicated they would prefer to pay an all-inclusive student fee rather than purchase individual school supplies. The one-time fee of $60 per child covers the cost of consumable school supplies, three school performances, ten skating sessions and a student agenda.
Families are required to provide the following:
  • 2 boxes of tissue
  • 1 set of inexpensive ear buds/ ear phones (ear phones preferred)
  • Indoor sneakers **very important to have Phys. Ed/gym appropriate footwear
  • backpack
  • lunch bag
***Classroom teachers receive $40 per student to purchase classroom materials the students use throughout the year. The remaining funds ($20) are used to cover the costs of three school performances, ten skating sessions (ice rental) and the cost of agendas. Occasionally, teachers may request additional items throughout the year to be used for special projects or to replenish supplies (for example: tissues/pencils)
***Each class takes at least one field trip throughout the school year, which may result in one additional fee. A specific amount to cover this expense is not incorporated into our student fee because the fees vary depending on the nature of the field trip. For example, a field trip to the Hampton Town Square is free whereas a trip to the Aquatic Center and NB Museum would incur a cost.
***As a school community, there are times when we support the greater community. This support may be in the form of food or toy donations or a monetary donation (Toonie) for a specific charity. All charitable fundraisers are optional for families.

-School fees may be paid via SCHOOL CASH ONLINE on the home page of our school website at http://web1.nbed.nb.ca/sites/ASD-S/1939/Pages/default.aspx  or with the direct link https://asd-s.schoolcashonline.com/ . Both take you to a form where you register and indicate your name, select how many children you are registering and which classes they are in (as well as the children’s names). You then have the option to pay via Paypal or directly with credit or debit. Computers will also be available in the lobby for parents to sign up and pay for their school fee(s).

-Our Back To School Social/Meet the Teacher event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 30th from 6:30-7:30. We will begin in the gymnasium with introduction of staff members, followed by class visits where information about curriculum, class routines, and expectations will be shared. Because many of you have more than one child and more than one class to visit, teachers have prepared slideshows with valuable information (which will be looping). Please introduce yourself to your child’s teacher and view the slideshow before moving on to your next child’s class. At 7:30pm we will invite all families to join us outside for ice cream. Families are welcome to bring tissues, inexpensive ear phones and indoor sneakers on the evening of our Meet the teacher so that children do not have to bring them on their first day of school.
-SPECIAL EVENT: As part of our playground fundraising initiatives, a special request from parent/fundraising coordinator, Andrea Hughes, is below:
On the ‘Meet the teacher’ night – I would love to get all the students and families on the soccer field to spell out HES in huge letters with the theme of the Aviva fund on Bristol board sized cards spelled underneath (#BetterTogether). This will take place at 7:30PM. It would be ideal to do it with the playground behind it so the drone can get both in the footage.
This event has 90-95% attendance and it can get parents and kids involved to show that EVERYONE will benefit from the new playground.  We will have each letter spelled out by grade (Grade 3 is H, Grade 4 is E, Grade 5 is S) and our new grade 2 students could hold the cards Better Together underneath HES. We would mark off each letter on the field that morning with construction spray paint (which washes off). The pictures and video will take 10-15 minutes in total once we have the group organized.
-PSSC (Parent School Support Committee) – although it is a busy evening for families, it is also an opportunity to express an interest in our PSSC. Each year we welcome 7-12 parent members to be part of this group. The PSSC advises and collaborates with me, the Principal, and other stakeholders to ensure that the school provides the best possible education for students. We meet once per month for 1.5 hours and there is no commitment beyond the meeting time. The PSSC is a great way to learn what goes on behind the scenes in the school. It is an easy time commitment and a valuable way to meet other interested parents and the principal. You get to learn about all the strategies put into place to better educate our children. As a parent you can have a voice in development of school policies. If interested please forward your name via email: sarah.blanchard@nbed.nb.ca
-First day of school: All grade 2-5 students will start on Tuesday, September 4th. Students will play on the Hawks Nest playground until 8:15AM. At this time, students in Grade 4 & 5 will go directly to classrooms while our new students and Grade 2 and 3 students will proceed to the gymnasium to meet their teachers. We will have all our specialty teachers and support staff available to meet students and assist them in getting to their classrooms. Please remember that morning supervision begins at 7:50 so students should not be dropped off before that time.
-Transportation: Please visit https://bp.nbed.nb.ca/asds/Eligibility.aspx?Page=Transportation for information regarding bus pick up and drop off times and locations based on address and grade level(s) of your children. A reminder that classes start for all students at 8:25 with all students grades 2-5 being dismissed at 2:40.
-Please advise any new families that have moved into our serving area to drop by the school the week of Aug. 20th to register their children. They can also reach out to me via email at sarah.blanchard@nbed.nb.ca .
We look forward to seeing everyone in a few short weeks.
Thank you,
Sarah Blanchard
