Sussex Middles Kicks Off Year With Many Accomplishments

Terry Fox Fundraising Campaign

We had another very successful campaign this year raising $4760 for cancer research. We presented Gwen Smith-Walsh, Terry Fox Foundation provincial director for NB and PEI, with a cheque on Oct. 28th. She stated that we were the #1 Terry Fox School in NB….something to be very proud of. Hats off SMS.
Noah Gibbons-Salib, Alexis Moffett, Helen Hunt, Kaedy Baird and Grace White were recognized as Outstanding Terry Foxers of the Year. This marked the 35th Anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope.

 Danny and Jessica Angel Foundation
On Saturday, September 26, from 10 am to 4pm, our leaders were busy packing groceries at Sobey’s. We collected $1070 for the Danny and Jessica Angel Foundation. Leaders will be  back at Sobey’s on Sunday Nov. 29, from 12-5pm to raise more money for the foundation, which gives lots to SMS, including money donations for our school’s breakfast club.

Stuff the Bus
SMS partnered with Sobey’s  again this year, collecting non perishable food items for the Sussex area. SMS collected over 1200 items. Five classes brought in over 100 items.

National Communities Random Act of Kindness Day
We received $200 and $ 25 Sobey’s card from the Sussex Area Community Foundation. This is how we spent the money.
Sobey’s card was spent on cat food for Frank’s (our school custodian) stray cats.
$200 grant was spent on 50 boxes (400g) of Cheerios. Our Student Leadership walked to the Sussex Sharing Club the afternoon of Nov. 6th to deliver the cereal. The employees of the sharing club were very surprised and extremely appreciative.

Diversity and Respect Week Nov. 16th – 20th
We had a fun filled week with lunchtime activities for all. Mrs. Lori Byers and I thought it would be great to get our Beyond the Hurt Team involved. Students were wonderful! We ended the week with a school spirit day and collected $ 125 for Crosswinds. Everybody is a Somebody at SMS is our belief.
