Congratulations to Harry Miller Middle School student Kaylyn Allison, pictured here with Superintendent Watson, on having her artwork selected for the winning holiday card design for 2019! Her artwork will appear on this year's official ASD-S holiday card.
Students from Barnhill Memorial School were among students from across the province to
test out their robotics skills at the province’s first LEGO League Robotics Tournament, an
international competition for middle schoolers. Teams competed in various “missions” by programming robots to complete challenges.
The 3rd Annual Mental Health Youth Forum brought together student and teacher representatives from each of the high schools across ASD-S. Organized through our district’s Educational Support Services (ESS) team, the theme was "Grow Through What You Go Through". With presentations, activities, and discussion throughout the day, participants learned that mental health is not all about mental illness, and the importance on working towards mental wellness.
Special presenter Mayor Don Darling offered his personal experience and insights in a valuable and moving discussion about wellness, depression, and thriving despite mental health challenges.
Again this year ASD-S schools are showing their talent in the CBC Music Class competition, including Deer Island Community School, River Valley Middle School, Macdonald Consolidated, and Sussex Regional High School. Check out their submissions on our YouTube channel playlist.
Macdonald Consolidated School's Music Club, made up of
Grade 6, 7 and 8 students, chose to cover “You Got to Run (Spirit of the Wind)” by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Tanya Tagaq for this year’s challenge. The Music Club is a dedicated and enthusiastic group of
students, meeting weekly to work on musical projects throughout the year and were energized by the song's driving rhythm, inspiring artists, and positive message.
MCS Music Club wishes to thank Mi’kmaw Elder Donna
Augustine from Elsipogtog First Nation, Mi’kmaw Elder Jim Augustine from
Elsipogtog First Nation, and Pipogoes Augustine Barlow from Elsipogtog, who
came to share their knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture and to offer support
and guidance as they prepared their cover for recording.
Nine middle schools from across ASD-S participated in the Middle School Math League at UNBSJ, which
involved solving 8 questions in teams and then a 4 part relay question. Congratulations to the winners, Millidgeville North School Team 1 and
our second place finishers Bayside Middle School Team 1! Thank you to all teacher coaches who gave of their time to coach their
teams and attend the event, UNBSJ volunteers, and staff
The entire staff and student body of Quispamsis Middle
School are reading "The Hydrofoil Mystery" in a school-wide book
club. Students are discussing the book during their English Language Arts
classes and making connections to other subjects in those classes. Thank you to the Town of
Quispamsis who contributed $800 to the initiative!
SJHS student Thomas Brow met with representatives of St. Francis Xavier University to sign a
letter of intent to play football for STFX next year. Tom is a member of the Under 18 Canadian
National Team for football and will be playing for Team Canada for the third time, at the International Bowl in Texas in January 2020.
- The totals are in and we are pleased to announce that an incredible $57,688.77 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society during the Relay for Life Youth events held by Kennebecasis Valley High School and Harbour View High School. Kudos to the organizers, participants, and supporters for this great achievement!
The River Valley Middle School theme for the month of December is
"Gratitude". Throughout the month they will be giving back within the
school and community. Raiders will have weekly RVMS 'Gratitude
Missions' to say thank you and show their appreciation for others.
- EA Elizabeth Folkins, recipient of the Jostens Renaissance National Staffulty Member of the Month Award. This award is for deserving staff who have made an impact within their school or community through Jostens Renaissance. Elizabeth as been part of KVHS' Renaissance Program for 13 years. Three teachers from ASD-S are among the ten educators in the NB Anglophone districts who have been presented with the Minister’s Excellence in Education award recognizing their outstanding work. Congratulations to Susan Boyle from Dr. A. T.
Leatherbarrow Primary School, Paul Kelly from Hazen White/St. Francis and Shane
Kelbaugh from Rothesay High.
- Congratulations to Saint John High’s grade 10 student, Erin Vringer who won the National U16 Cross-Country Championship recently. Erin won the U16 category at the 2019 Canadian Cross Country Championships on Sat. Nov. 30 in Abbotsford, BC at Clearbrook Park.
ASD-S
was nominated for a “Diversity
Champion Award” in the category of Heritage and Education at the PRUDE (Pride of Race, Unity and Dignity through Education) award ceremony . The Hampton Middle School WE Group and teacher Dan Foote, were recipients of a Diversity Champion Award in the Youth Leader category. Well done all!
Congratulations to the Harbour View High School Chess team - nine of their players qualified for Provincials at the SJEC tournament. Caleb
Morse won for grade 10 and Jacob Cerny for grade 11.
HVHS is among the many schools who participate in the ASD-S Chess Tournaments across the district. Thank
you to Subject Coordinator Darren White for leading this annual event for our students!
The
Middle School GSA Conference was well attended with 70
students and teacher representatives from each of our 21 middle schools. Lots of learning and community building!
Congrats to Saint Rose School on winning Best School entry at the 15th annual Lancaster Santa Claus Parade.
