Butterflies at the Saint John City Market

As you walk through the Saint John City Market, you will notice that the rafters have been transformed into a true kaleidoscope of colour. Over 1,300 students in grades kindergarten to 12 hand-painted 440 butterflies that now hang in the Market.

The City of Saint John and City Market Association collaborated with students and staff from 32 schools across the Greater Saint John area to make a tradition out of a project that began last year with 250 fish that were hooked on the ceiling inside the City Market. This year’s project has grown in both scope and size.

Kevin Loughery, the manager for the Saint John City Market, said the city and market merchants are pleased to be a part of a project that represents the true spirit of community collaboration. “What the students create goes well beyond their artwork. They contribute to the atmosphere of excitement that surrounds our City’s historic market and strengthen its character and sense of tradition.”

The project engages students from the two school districts, the City of Saint John, the business community and a charitable cause that, in turn, reaches back out to support the larger Saint John region.

“The Anglophone South School District is pleased to once again partner with the Saint John City Market. We encourage our students to engage in Global Citizenship and giving back to our community, which is a perfect fit with the Butterfly project this year and last year’s Hooked on the Market project,” said Erica Lane, community engagement coordinator for Anglophone South School District. “Our students and teachers take great pride in the artwork they create and it is exciting for them to know that their talents will be shared with the community and tourists throughout the summer months. We are very fortunate to benefit from wonderful partnerships such as the one forged with the City Market.”

“The Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain is very excited to have participated in this wonderful project. This was a very positive experience for our students and they are proud to contribute to a project of this magnitude. Thank you for allowing us to take part in this,” said France Maillet, Vice Principal, Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain.

The butterflies will be on display in the City Market until late 2014, after which time they will be sold for charity. All proceeds will go to support the annual Harbour Lights Campaign, to help feed those in need through local food banks from Sussex to St. Stephen.
