This Week:

We are running very low on kleenex in the classroom.  If you can possibly help out by sending in an extra box, it would be greatly appreciated.  We have been going through a lot with so many runny noses!

Take Home Books: New take home books will come home on Monday.  Please return them by Friday.

Skating

  • We will be going to the York Arena to skate on Feb. 7 and 21.  Our skating time is 9:00 - 9:40.
  • Safety guidelines require all students to wear a helmet!
  • Students are required to wear skates on the ice as well.  If adults are helping they can wear boots.
  • If you would like to join us and help tie some skates or come on the ice please let me know!  The more help, the better to get all those skates tied and maximize our ice time.

Literacy

Jolly Phonics: We have learned all our letters and sounds!  We will continue to review these throughout the school year.

  • This week we are reviewing the short vowel sounds.  They are tricky and are found in the middle of all our CVC words we are going to practice reading and writing.

Sight Words:

  • Please continue to practice: me, I, it, like, the, is, in, can, was, and, to, play, a, that, at, see, he, my, you, said, went
  • Practice reading and writing these at home
  • Challenge your child to find sight words they know in books

CVC Words:

  • CVC means consonant, vowel, consonant.  These 3 letter words are the first words we will learn to sound out.  They usually have the short vowel sound and therefore are easiest to sound out.  This week we will segment CVC words and really focus on the vowel sound - sometimes we get them mixed up!

Reading Strategies:

  • We will begin to learn reading strategies to help us read unknown words in books.
  • Eagle Eye: He has really good eyesight and reminds us that we need to look at the pictures for clues about what the words might say.
  • Lips the Fish: This week we will learn about Lips the Fish.  Fish have great lips! Lips the Fish reminds us that we need to get our lips ready to say the beginning sound of a word.  We often combine Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish.

Writing:

  • Last week we wrote an independent piece.  The expectation is that students are attempting to write a sentence to match their picture.
  • This week students will conference with the teacher and choose a writing goal together based on their independent piece.

Math

  • We are working on our number sense with numbers up to 10.
  • This week we are focusing on the numbers that come before and after.
