– 10:25. Thank you to everyone who joined us for skating on the 7th.

à The 100th Day of School
is creeping up on us (It'll be on Wed, March 1...if we don't have any more snow days!). Students will be asked to make a collection of 100 things
to share with their classmates. This should be a collection of 100 items that are easy to bring to school. If your child has a large collection, you may choose to email us a picture of this collection instead. Ask your child to start thinking about what items/objects
they could use for their 100 things collection.
à Hot Lunch Order Forms were sent home last
week. They are due on Thursday, Feb. 23rd.
à Our pancake breakfast has been
rescheduled for the morning of March 1st. This special breakfast is
FREE for all students. YUMMY!
à There is no school for students on
Friday, Feb. 24th as it is a Professional Learning Day for
teachers.
à The Grade One teachers have decided to
send home a progress report. This report will give you a snapshot of how your
child is progressing at this point in the year. It may also have a few
suggestions of activities that you can do at home to help your child. Look for
this report in your child’s message bag near the end of the month.
The week before March break is Winter Carnival
week at BPS! There is a special theme each day of the week. Monday, Feb. 27th is
CRAZY HAIR DAY
Tuesday, Feb. 28th is TEAM
COLOR DAY
Wednesday, Mar. 1st is DR.
SEUSS DAY;
Thursday, Mar. 2nd is PJ DAY
Friday, Mar. 3rd is JERSEY
DAY.
à Friday, March 3rd: Scholastic Orders Due (Feb & March flyers going home tomorrow)
à March Break – Monday, March 6th until
Friday, March 10th – NO SCHOOL
For the next two weeks
before March Break, we will be working on the following concepts.
Literacy
Words of the week: his,
last, want, came, then
We will also be reviewing
ALL the sight words we have covered so far this year. If your child can read
them all, try spelling them or finding a rhyming word for the ones you can.
Word Family:
ame (name, same, flame, blame, etc)
Word Work: r
blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr). We
are encouraging students to recognize the two letters as one sound.
Instead of 'b - r' when sounding out...they recognize the br blend and
say the sound together 'br'.
Helping at home - please review and practice
****High Frequency Sight
Words****
Please keep reviewing
until mastered. If your child can read the words with ease, have them practice
spelling/create sentences.
Practice reading words
with blends:
trip print grade free trade grape creep dream train
Practice printing
sentences using the new sight words. Make sure they include capitals and
punctuation. Have them reread and edit on their own.
Practice reading words
with sound teams.
sh, ch, th, wh,
qu, ck, ai, ay, oa/ow, ie, or, a_e u_e i__e o__e
er, ir, ur, oo,
ue., ou/ow, ar, oi, oy, aw
Writing:
We are going back to the basics in writing.
The students all wrote an independent piece of writing last week and we
are using that piece to guide them towards a writing goal to make their writing
even better than it already is. Some
goals your child may be working on are: using punctuation in correct places,
remembering where uppercase letters really go, adding supportive details, using
WOW words (awesome, super, fantastic, etc), using the word wall to help them
spell, descriptive words (big, red, juicy, etc.)
Math: We will finish up this part of the unit on
addition and subtraction to 18, as well as counting by 2's 5's and 10's in the
next two weeks and will assess the students on what they know and where gaps
may still be. This week we will continue to use money to help give the
students a real life reason to count by 5's and 10's. If you have a handful of
dimes or nickels at home, try letting your child count them with you.
Mental math strategy - Doubles
plus 1 strategy. For example, if your child knows 4+4=8, then he/she can easily
solve 4+5 because it is just one more! Knowing doubles facts “in a snap” can help
students solve these “near doubles” facts much easier.
Review
saying the number
sequence forward and backward between two numbers (1-50)
Count by 2’s to
20, 5’s to 50/100, 10’s to 100
Have a great week!
