Last month in Grade 1 post - June

Month at a Glance – June

I can’t believe there is only 3 short weeks left of school.

     Here’s what is coming up.

·       Our Inquiry Fair Open House is on Thursday, June 8th. Everyone is welcome to come into the school and view the projects from 11:15 am until noon. Students will be displaying their projects and discussing what they learned about their research topic.

·       The choir will be singing at lunch that day.  Feel free to stick around to watch the choir perform

·       Popsicles on sale Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for $1 by student leaders to raise money for their year end trip.  (Limit 1 per day)

·       All school reading books should be returned to school by June 9th.  Continue to read on Raz Kids in the evenings.

·       June 15th is the Grade 1 water day.  Remember to send in a white or light coloured shirt to tie dye by June 9, and let us know if you can come help out that day between 10 and 12.  Pizza will be served for lunch that day for the Grade 1’s

Students should bring a change of clothes and a snack still for that day.  (and lunch if they don't like pizza)

·        June 16th is the last day to purchase milk.

·       There is a sock hop on Monday, June 19th. The cost will be a non-perishable food item for the food bank.

·       Also June 19th, we will walk to Hyla Park for a field trip if the water levels cooperate.  Volunteers needed.

·       BPS Family Picnic will be on Tuesday, June 20th.

·       The K-2 students will participate in an outdoor fun day on Wednesday, June 21st.

·       Friday, June 23rd is the last day of school for students! This will be a half day and students will be dismissed like a Wednesday Dismissal.

Math this month

We are working on 2D shapes and 3D objects.  The outcomes are listed below.

SS2 – Sort 3D objects and 2D shapes using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule

       * Sort a given set of familiar 2D shapes or 3D objects using a given sorting rule

(these shapes all roll, or these shapes all have a curved edge, these shapes all have at least one circle face, etc)

       * Determine the difference between two given pre-sorted sets of familiar 2D shapes and explain a possible sorting rule used to sort them.

SS3 – Replicate composite 2D shapes and 3D objects

        * We have been making shapes and objects using geoboards, clay, and drawings in class this week.

SS4 – Compare 2D shapes to parts of 3D objects in the environment

       * Identify 3D objects in the environment that have parts similar to a given 2D shape

        Literacy this month

This month we will continue to practice our sight words, vowel and letter blends and reading strategies.  We will do this through activities around our ocean project, you and your world outcomes and summer themes.

Stay tuned for any upcoming info we missed.
