Grade 1 Weekly Update January 23rd - February 3rd 2017

Good afternoon,

What a busy time we have had since I updated you last!  We enjoyed our field trip to the hospital and learned a lot.  I am sure many of you were shown "broken" fingers and learned the largest organ in your body.  The students were amazing and so engaged during the 2 hours at the hospital.
 
We were also very lucky on Friday to have Miriam's mom (Patricia) come in to our class to help us with an art project related to Chinese New Year.  We read many books and learned that this is the year of the rooster.
 
This week's words of the week are: day, into, mother, play, get .   We are looking at words that contain ss, zz, ff, and ll combinations. The poems of the week are "Snowball" and "Falling Snow".  These will be uploaded to the class website.
 
In writing we are working on personal narratives and looking a more detailed planner to help us organize our thoughts.  This week we will begin to focus on creating beginnings that will "hook" our reader's attention and leave them wanting to read more.
 
In math we are working on counting by 5's to 100 and different strategies for subtraction (numberlines, pictures).  This week we will also begin working on part-part-whole relationships as we lay the ground work for relating addition and subtraction.
 
In You and Your World we are continuing to work on mapping.
