Weekly News Feb. 8-12

Monday, February 6th, 2017
Dear Families:

February is such a busy month!  We have lots to look forward to – Valentine’s Day, Day 100, Coyote Carnival, Black History Month . . . wow!  It will go by so quickly.

What we are learning:
Literacy - This week we will learn the next 5 words and related phrases on List 4 (very, an, over, your, its).  We will introduce our “l” blends (cl, bl, fl, gl, sl).  Our reading strategy for the month of February is finding a chunk in the word when trying to decode (identifying a part of the word you know to figure out the unknown word i.e. “window” – you can recognize the “in” and “ow” to help you put together the word window!)
Math – We will introduce “Friends of 10” (the combination of numbers that add to 10) as well as continue to work on doubles plus 1 to 13 (Ex. If you know 6+6=12, then you would know that 6+7=13)  as well as review addition of +3 and +4 strategies, counting from 0-50 by 1s, counting back from 20, counting by 2s to 20 and counting by 5s and 10s to 50.
You and Your World – In honour of Valentine’s Day, we will be discussing the qualities of a good friend (turn taking, politeness, sharing, patience, self control, kindness and manners).

 Information Items/Dates to Remember:
·         Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.  We will be having a Valentine exchange on Tuesday, February 14th.  Students are welcome to wear red/pink on that day and can make or buy Valentine cards for their classmates.  Please bring them in by Friday, Feb. 10th to make sure they are here for Valentine’s Day!
·         Feb. 24th – PD day for teachers.  No School for Students.
·         The We Act kids have made beautiful heart magnets that will be sold from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14 for $1.00 each.  All profits will go to our global charity: Heartline Orphanage in Haiti.  You can get yours on the dance floor.  Thank you for your on-going support.
·         There will be Zumba with Michelle Burke in the big gym on Friday, Feb. 10.  The cost will be $2.00.  All profits will go to help children in Haiti.  Thanks for your support!
·         Grade 5 Student Council SPCA Fundraiser – please check the website to see the list of donations they will be accepting to help our local SPCA.
·         If you would like to be a guest reader in our class, please contact me.

Homework
·         List 4 words and phrases.
·         We have noticed such great reading progress for those students who read their good fit books each night!  Great job, grade one – keep up the great effort!  I have worked on reading evaluations all month and I am really impressed with the growth! I have a few students left to do (very time-consuming) but many will be taking home different leveled books now. J
