Grade 2 Hoyt/Crook Weekly News

Friday, September 16thh, 2016

Dear Families,

Wow! It is hard to believe we are through our second week of school. Our class has been very busy working on our routines and procedures. The class is settling in well and we are excited for the year to come.

What we are learning:

Math:

We have started our unit on Patterns!  In this unit your child will develop an understanding of repeating and increasing patters. They will also be able to explain and represent equality and inequality.

Over the next few weeks we will be practicing our routines for math work stations. Through these stations your child will have the opportunity to practice and build upon math skills taught.

Literacy:

We have begun to practice our daily 5 routines and your child is now able to Read to Self for 15 minutes! We have started to work on writing and will continue to build our stamina. In the next few weeks we will introduce Read to Someone, ipads and Word Work. Our small group guided reading will also begin in the next few weeks following our assessments.

For Word Work this year your child will be working on word lists at their own individual level. We will begin with a review of grade 1 sight words and if needed your child will either continue to practice those or move on to a more difficult list.  On Monday we will send home a copy of all Grade 1 and Grade 2 sight words which will be covered this year.

Writer’s Workshop is underway and we are reviewing how to write small moment stories. As the month goes on your child will have a weekly writing skill that they will focus on. Once that skill is mastered they will move on to another.

You and Your World

This month we are learning our classroom rules and procedures. We will review our WITS program to help your child with conflict resolution. We also talk about being a good friend and being kind to others.

Information Items/Dates to Remember:

·         If you have not already done so please send in your child’s $45 student fees as soon as possible. Class trips, art supplies and all other learning materials come out of class fees.  Supplies have been purchased and your child is using them daily.

·         Our school Terry Fox walk will take place on Thursday September 29th. Don’t forget that we are collecting Tooines for Terry again this year.

·         If you are sending an email to us could you please remember to include both teachers. If there was ever a case that one of us was out for the day it would ensure that the email is received. Our emails are listed at the bottom of this newsletter.

·         We have noticed that some students are not wearing the proper indoor footwear for Phys. Ed.  Please ensure your child has both socks and sneakers to wear in school each day.

·         It is very important that you label your child’s jackets, sweaters, coats, shoes, backpack, etc… to help us get lost items of clothing to their rightful owners!

Homework

·      Each day, your child will be bringing home 1 book at his/her independent reading level (good fit books). We have used your child’s end of grade one reading level as a starting point and we will be updating levels as we regularly re-assess your child’s progress. Please make time each night to allow your child to read these to you.  Don’t forget to fill in your child’s RAH RAH ( Reading At Home)  sheet each night. HH

·      For some fun math practice at home, look for patterns around your house and community with your child. Have your child create and extend patters for you using materials found around the house!  ( cereal, paper clips, buttons, paper & crayons)

As always if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at school, send a note in your child’s communication bag, or send us an email.
