Week of Oct. 24th, 2016
Monday, October 24th, 2016
Dear Families:

October is certainly flying by – can you believe it is the last full week of October?

What we are learning:

Our Balanced Literacy time now includes read to self, word work, work on writing, listen to reading and read to self.  This week we will review all words and phrases in list 1.  Our reading strategy for the month of October is to first take a picture walk and then to track the text with your finger.  We will be introducing the sound for “oa/ow”.  We are continuing to work on proper letter and number formation – if you notice your little one making any “backward” numbers or letters, please correct them so that it doesn’t become a habit.

In Math, we have been working on counting in a variety of ways forward and backward from a given number to 20, counting by 2s and exploring the wonderful teen numbers.

In You and Your World, we will discuss Halloween safety and continue our WITS discussions.

Information Items/Dates to Remember:

·         Please continue to check your child’s hair nightly as there have been cases of lice in our school.
·         Picture retakes will be on Nov. 4th.
·         Howlfest will be on Oct.29th from 4-6pm.  (Wear your costume and get your spook on!!).
·         Monday Oct.31st the children will be invited to wear orange and black instead of costumes.  We will not send home our Homework bags until Tuesday, Nov. 1st.

Homework:

·         Each night have your child read 1 good fit book to his/her “homework helper”.
·         Review list 1 words and phrases.
·         Remember to send in your library books on Wednesday so they will be here for our library time on Friday.
·         Take advantage of any counting opportunities like counting back from 20, skip counting by 2’s starting at 0, counting forward and backward to 20 from a given number, finding one more / one less than a given number.  This is a great “incidental” learning opportunity when you are in the car or on a walk, etc.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call us at school, send a note in your child’s communication bag, or send us an e-mail.
