Mme Sollows-Astle - Friday, October 26th, 2018
Homeroom 6H

1) Students are decorating name tags I gave them last week.  I try to change these up on our bulletin board with each season or holiday. I encourage original artwork should they want to do some for this display.

2) WE SCARE HUNGER drive is in full swing. We are accepting donations of non-perishable food items which will go to local food banks.

6C, 6D, 6F, 6H (FI Social St.)& 6I (Social Studies)

1) We had an amazing guest speaker who is a retired teacher and grandmother of one of our students here at GSMS do a presentation about Nepal. Students are now moving from the interview presentations to a mini-project on Nepal. They will do a few small activities, including a small craft of making a prayer flag like the ones Mrs. Jeffrey showed us.  They will be able to write inspirational, positive messages on the flags which we will hang up around the room.  The messages can be written in any language and be messages which reflect each student's own spiritual path or in French with a positive message that has no spiritual connection.

Mrs. Jeffrey ended her presentation by encouraging students to follow their dreams and strive toward them, though the path may not be a direct route.

2) Although I am putting it on the Social Studies homework page, I want to be sure you understand that this next item is only a suggestion and not required. I asked the students if they wanted to reach out to the Serpa students in some way. Some suggested becoming pen pals, but unfortunately, they do not even have regular post and cannot afford stamps. They can, however, write notes or draw pictures which share our variety of cultural activities with them and Mrs. Jeffrey can take them with her when she goes on her next trip. Some students would like to contribute more and so I asked Mrs. Jeffrey what she might consider taking with her on her next trip and she thought gloves and mittens. So, if you would like to contribute new gloves or mittens for children at this school, we will collect them Monday to Thursday next week and then we will send them along with Mrs. Jeffrey.  The students are ages 5 to 18.

3) We have almost finished all the interview projects and so those evaluations should be coming home over the next 2 weeks.
