Re: POSITIVE COVID-19 CASE AT LEO HAYES HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have been informed of another positive Covid-19 case at Leo Hayes High School. This is in addition to the two cases that were reported last week. We are working with Public Health officials to identify any students and school personnel who may have been in contact with the case. Public Health has also confirmed that at this time, there is NO in-school transmission at Leo Hayes High School.

We understand you may feel anxious over the coming days. Public Health officials will contact you if your child has been in close contact with the confirmed case and will tell you if your child needs to self-isolate. Please note that this contact may initially come through your school principal, who would be sending the message on behalf of Public Health. If you are not contacted by Public Health officials (through a call or your principal), your child can continue with regular activities.

Tomorrow, Monday, May 17, is a planned non-instructional day as per the school calendar.

Tuesday, May 18, Wednesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 20 will be online learning days for all students (A-Z). Students are asked to follow their regular schedule online and from home.

We will reassess the situation on Thursday and provide you with an update on continued learning at that time.

It is natural to want to know if your child may have been exposed to the virus. Public Health officials will inform those who are at risk of the next steps, but to protect the privacy of students and school personnel, other details, including names, will not be released.

Children and young people look to the adults in their lives to guide them on how to react to worrying and stressful events. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about any anxieties and remind them to treat one another with kindness and respect, in person and on social media.

If your child is showing any symptoms of Covid-19, you should:

  1. Register them online for a test by clicking “Get tested” on the GNB coronavirus website (www.gnb.ca/coronavirus). OR
  2. Contact Tele-Care 811.

The 811 operators will evaluate your child before sending them for testing. If you have questions that are health-related, please visit COVID-19NB@gnb.ca

Thank you for your continued support as we respond to the pandemic.

Sincerely,

David McTimoney, Superintendent
