Everyone Can Become Best Buddies

By Moriah Lewis

Best Buddies, a club at Nackawic High School that helps students with disabilities interact with other students, meets on Wednesdays in Mr. Casey’s room.

The Nackawic High club meets each week, while other Best Buddies groups meet all around the world.

Best Buddies International website says, “We are the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

The exact origin of this group at Nackawic High is unknown, but the International organization began in 1962.

Mr. Casey, a teacher at Nackawic High, has been involved with Best Buddies since it began.

This year, Ms. Schriver has helped take charge of the group activities. “I’d encourage anybody to take part. Isn’t that why we’re doing this? To not be divided. I’d like to erase the line that divides us from people with disabilities,” says Schriver.

Although Best Buddies this year has gotten a late start at Nackawic High, the group has made every effort to plan lots of inclusive activities for teens. Activities included a chocolate Easter egg hunt and decorating cupcakes.

“We’re taking baby steps to be able to take that big leap. Best Buddies is a great group for anybody to join,” says Schriver. They are always looking for fresh ideas and great activities to have for our students.

Come on down to Mr. Casey’s room on Wednesday at 12:40 and share your creativity.
