Update January 30, 2017
multicultural.jpgHello families of 2 Stewart / McCullough,
Where has the time gone?  We can’t believe we are moving into February already.  Just a few updates:
-          Please continue to read at home with your children daily for 10-20 minutes.  Home reading books and Raz Kids are both good options.  It is very important that you have your child demonstrate their understanding of what they are reading.  Please remember to return books each Friday so that new books can be sent home in Monday folders.  https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login
-          January sight words were sent home with your children a few weeks ago.  They should practice these words (reading and spelling them) a few times a week.  Keep up the great work boys and girls!
-          Soon reading comprehension activities will be going home on a weekly basis.  Grade 2 is a provincial reading assessment year and children need to be exposed to how the assessment will be conducted.  These activities will likely be sent home beginning the end of February or first of March.  Please make sure your child does these independently and return them to school.  You will also see from what they do, how you can continue to support them at home.
-          Math groups have just begun and you will get a letter shortly from your child’s math group teacher explaining the concepts they are working on.  Please help to reinforce these concepts at home, and remember, Dreambox is always available to them to practice online.  https://play.dreambox.com/login/uj4b/parkses
-          We have begun exploring the concept of “Change” in our You and Your World Class.  We have had a number of great discussions on what change is, how people and “things” have changed over time and how our class wants to strive to make positive change in our school, community and world.  With this being said, the children have decided to embark on a special activity.  From February 11 – 18 Mrs. Stewart will be in Cuba with her family on the Canada Cuba Good will Baseball Tour.  The group she is going with is providing service in the way of collecting and donating 600 pounds of baseball equipment and school supplies to give to the Cuban people.  Mrs. Stewart is going to share her experience with the class and they will be comparing both countries on how they are the same and different and how things have or have not changed in certain places of the world, particularly in their schools.  The children would like to do a collection of small gently used items they already have in their homes that could benefit another child.  It could be as simple as a spare toothbrush and toothpaste you have in your bathroom, a bouncy ball your child no longer plays with, or a gently used t-shirt or sneakers your child has outgrown.  I’ve let the children know that if they want to participate that they are only to bring in one item, and it is not to be something they go out and purchase.  If you and your child would like to give to create a positive change for the Cuban people, please send it to school no later than Monday, February 6.
-          Stay tuned for more information on LiD (Learning in Depth) and home activities that will begin soon to support the learning at school!
Have a great week! J Mrs. Stewart & Mrs. McCullough
