Weekly Update

Hello families!

I hope you all had a chance to enjoy the amazing weather and take in some Harvest J&B festivities over the weekend. Here are the reminders and homework items for this week:

  • 15 minutes of French reading each night: Practice makes progress! Research has consistently shown that students who read at least 15 minutes a day make accelerated progress in reading (click here for more details). We have been exploring the classroom library and many students have discovered small chapter-book series they really enjoy reading. Please remember to have your child record the minutes they read each night in their agenda.

  • Practice basic math facts: Basic facts fluency is to math as sight words are to reading! The more quickly students can recall basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, the more easily they will be able to solve more complex equations. On ClassDojo I've posed students' results for how many addition equations they were able to solve in 5 minutes. This will serve as a benchmark to see how their fluency improves over the course of the school year. Students will be bringing home a form explaning how you can use Xtra-Math.org to practice basic facts, however there are many other options available including flash cards and a few card games students are familiar with.

  • The annual DFS catalogue fundraiser packets were set home last week. Please help us work together to fundraise for various PSS initiatives!

  • If you have not yet sent in your $40 fee for school supplies, please do as as soon as possible.

  • Student Council elections for classroom representatives will be held Monday, September 24th. Students interested in running should prepare a short speach for Monday explaining what qualities would make them a good leader. Student Council will meet every Thursday at noon.

  • Student Vote: Students will also have the opportunity to "vote" in the Provincial Election Monday, September 24th. Student Vote is an organization that encourages the education and participation of youth in the democratic progress. We will be discussing election news and issues of interest to them throughout the week. We encourage you to discuss with your child at home as well.
Upcoming dates:
  • Monday, October 1st: Picture Day!
  • Tuesday October 2nd: Character Development Assembly (Awareness)
Have a great week!
