Welcome and Update

Hello families,

I am thrilled to have your child in my class this year and look forward to a year of fun and learning together!

For the past two weeks we have been focusing on review of end of year grade 3FI outcomes such as: sentence structures, sounds, story retells and numbers in French.  We have also been concentrating on establishing routines and class norms as well as discussing our interests and learning preferences.  Your child should be bringing home a French book each night to continue practicing reading aloud and doing a quick retell of the story.

This coming week, we will be starting small group guided reading.  Our focus in literacy will be on reading various biographies and discussing the features of these texts.  Students will start planning their own autobiography (physical description, family, interests etc).  Students will use graphic organizers to plan this work.  I will be modeling this writing with my own autobiography.  We will be paying close attention to capitalization and punctuation as well as using paragraphs to organize our writing.

In math, we will be starting our unit on patterns and relations.  Students will be exploring a variety of increasing and decreasing number and shape patterns and using a pattern rule to describe these patterns. For example: À partir de _________ ajoute/enlève _________ chaque fois. (Starting with _______ add/subtract ________ each time.)  You can help your child at home by identifying and describing patterns you see around your house or neighborhood.  You can also practice skip counting both backwards and forwards by 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 etc.

In health, we are learning about strategies to help us be at our best by exploring our physical, emotional and social health.  This week we will discuss specific strategies we can use to help us feel calm when we feel scared, frustrated or sad.

Have a wonderful week!

Mme Sheehan
