Skip Counting Game

Hello families,

In our math group today we played a quick skip counting game. I realized immediately that a LOT of students had difficulty adding simple numbers (ex: 68 + 3). At this point, it is extremely important that students have their basic facts well engrained so that more complex operations are less challenging. In addition to practicing addition/subtraction facts, here is also a quick game you can play at home, in the car... anywhere!

  • One player chooses a pattern rule. For example: Start at 47 and add 4 each time.
  • The players then each take turns saying the next number in the sequence. For example: 47, 51, 55, 59, 63, 64...
  • You can choose to play the "elimination" version (if a player says the wrong number or takes too long to respond they are eliminated) OR you can simply pick a desired numbers of terms (ex: the first 10 numbers of the pattern) and then choose a new pattern when you're done
I strongly encourage you to give the game I try at home and see how your child does. If they are not easily or automatically able to say the next number when adding single digits, they will really need to practice their basic facts!
