Grade 2 Week at a Glance (Jan. 28-Feb.1)
Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be
sent back Wednesday.
Nightly – read
good fit book, practice sight words, practice sound teams introduced up to this
point. Students now have the option of
reading books online on Raz-kids
Literacy:
Words
of the Week: line, very, who, children, small
Word Family: -ine.
How many words can you think of that end with the –ine sound?
Sound Teams: Prefixes
This week we will be learning
about prefixes that mean “not” and how when we add these prefixes to the
beginning of a word, it changes the meaning. Please have your child practice
reading the words below and talk about how the prefix changes the meaning:
understanding – misunderstanding
possible – impossible
like – dislike
lock - unlock
Reading
strategies: Fiction vs. Nonfiction
We will continue looking at
the difference between fiction and nonfiction by reading and comparing a
variety of books from both genres.
Writing: Voice
This week we will be learning how to add “voice” to our
writing. Writers often use bold and/or uppercase letters to emphasize certain
words. Our goal this week will be to incorporate this strategy into our own
stories.
Math:
We will soon start our unit on addition and
subtraction to 100. In this unit, your
child will be developing strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers,
with and without regrouping. We will use
many models such as hundred charts, number lines, and base ten blocks. How you can help: have your child practice adding groups of 10
to two digit numbers and subtracting groups of 10 from two digit numbers. Adding and subtracting multiples of ten is a
good place to start! For example: ask your child “23+10”, “52+20”, “35-10”,
“92-20”, etc.
Continue to practice facts to 20 and be
sure they are using strategies….see the note that was sent home.
