Grade 2 Mrs. Dyker/Mrs. Woodley
Week at a Glance (Nov. 28 – Dec.2)
Tuesday Night – Pack library books to be sent back Wednesday.
Nightly – read good fit books. Students now have the option of reading books online on Raz-kids, practice word wall words.
Literacy:
Word Wall Words: asked, back, could, mother, not, would
Please have your child practice reading & spelling the words above.
Word Family: -ot & -ack
How many words can you find that end with ot & ack?
Sound Teams: “ou” for the short u sound.
Have students read the following words: double, young, cousin, touch, and point out how these words are “rule breakers”. Rather than making the ou sound that we are used to, as in out, loud, shout, etc., they make the short u sound.
Reading strategies: Retell
This week we will be practicing retelling the important parts of a story (characters, setting, sequence of important events, etc.). Have your child provide a retell of his/her home reading books when reading at home.
Writing: Punctuation
This week we will be reviewing when to use punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, question marks, and commas). Have your child write two sentences about his/her day and practice using proper punctuation.
Math:
· We will continue to work with Numbers to 100. Please practice the following;
o Counting by 1’s, 2's, 5’s, and 10’s forward and backward to/from 100. Counting by 10’s to starting ‘off the decade’ (ex: 3, 13, 23…, 64, 54, 44…), count by 2’s starting at any even number (ie; 26, 28, 30, 32…, 88, 86, 84…), counting by 5’s starting with any number ending in 0 or 5 (ie; 45, 50, 55…, 95, 90, 85…), Count by 1’s to 100 forward and backward from different starting points.
o Provide your child with various amounts of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes) and have him/her count the amount. Practice writing the total using the cent symbol. Remind your child to always start their count with the coins that have the greatest value (ie; dimes first, then nickels, then pennies)
o Have your child practice ordering a set of numbers to 100 from least to greatest and greatest to least.
o Have your child compare two numbers and say which is greater/less and how they know (place value)
