Sept 12-16 Update

Hi Parents/Guardians,

What a fantastic start to the new school year! The students are starting to settle into the Intensive French program and the new routines. They are eager to learn French and their enthusiasm will go a long way!  It is exciting to see.  With learning a new language, it is normal for students to feel frustrated at times. Your enthusiasm, positivity and consistency will help with their success. I want to take the time to send you a few housekeeping notes to keep you informed.

Phys Ed – We have Phys Ed three times a week.  Our scheduled times are Monday, Thursday and Friday. It is encouraged that your child wear comfortable clothing on those days.

Library – We have library Tuesday mornings. Students may borrow two books for the week and are asked to return them the following week, even if they want to renew them; otherwise they cannot take out new books.  Library begins this week.

Intensive French – I sent home a contract for students to sign with the witness of a parent/guardian.  This is their commitment to speak French during our Intensive French bloc each day. The family photos I have requested are not mandatory and there is no rush to send them in. We’ll begin talking about family members next week.

Math – Both myself and Mr. Graham will be teaching your son/daughter Math this year. We are currently working on basic facts and patterns.  In Mental Math we're working on Front-end rounding.  This is a strategy used in estimation. Ask your child to explain it to you!

Basic Facts – In Grade 5, the expectation as to the basic facts is “automaticity, which means that students are able to recall multiplication facts with little or no effort. To practice their basic facts, students can use a deck of cards (face cards removed); flip over two cards, then multiply the numbers on the cards to find the product. You can modify the activity by removing the twos, , threes, fives, etc. from the deck to focus the game on the higher multiplication facts (or removing the higher cards to focus on the lower facts). Only putting certain cards in one of the two piles will limit the facts to only those particular times tables.  Ex: putting only the 4s, 5s, and 6s in one pile will mean the multiplication questions will always be from those particular times tables.

I am looking forward to a great year working with you and your child.
